Introduction

The foundation of Salvation Army dated back in the 1850s with its root in England. The
idea was started by William Booth decided to abandon the traditional church pulpit concept and
instead he decided to take the gospel of Jesus Christ directly to the people of London (Booth,
2010). Together with his wife, Catherine Booth, they used to walk the streets of England
preaching to the homeless, the destitute, the poor and the hungry. They didn’t quit or feel
discouraged while doing the work of God despite the fact that their fellow clergymen disagreed
with their unconventional approach and also faced violence from the people (Horridge, 2015).
The organization by then operated under the name ‘The Christian Mission’ for ten years and by
1865, it has attracted more than 10,000 evangelists and volunteers.
It was until 1978 that the organization changed its name from ‘The Christian Mission’ to
‘The Salvation Army,' the name which came up when the annual report was being read. Among
the first people converted were the prostitutes, thieves, gamblers and the drunkards. Between the
