Introduction

India is a federal parliamentary democratic republic, and therefore its politics take place
in the framework of its Constitution. The state is headed by the president and the government by
the prime minister. The Indian state has a dual polity system meaning that it has a double
government consisting of a central authority and state authority. The constitution defines the
powers of the two governments as well as their limitations (Philips, 2008). It also provides for an
independent Judiciary headed by a Supreme Court. The constitution is considered the most
powerful tool and is well recognized. The Supreme Court The Legislative branch of the
government of India has two houses. The first one is the Upper House which is called the Rajya
Sabha. The Upper House represents the states. Secondly is the Lower House which is referred to
as Lok Sabha. This house represents the Indian citizens as a whole.
The Government
Governments in India are formed through a free and fair election held after every five
years. After the election, parties securing a large percentage of their respective Lower Houses
membership make the state governments. India is often identified as the biggest democracy in
the world. The country has more than two hundred registered political parties which are quite a
big number that not many other democracies have ever witnessed in their states. However, the
political parties domination the national politics of India are two, namely; the Bharatiya Janata
and the Indian Congress Party. Bharatiya Janata commonly referred by its abbreviation BJP is a
right-wing party greatly characterized by fiscal conservativeness. On the other hand, The Indian
National Party which is simply referred to as the Congress by the people is a center-left party and
