Assignment 3 The Dalai Lama says, "I truly believe that compassion provides the basis of human survival, the real value of human life, and without that there is a basic piece missing" (Dalai Lama and Culter 119). In order to develop compassion, the Dalai Lama recommends that people first understand the suffering of others and then work to free others from suffering. Only then, according to the Dalai Lama, will people truly be happy. Especially for Western audiences, this may be a radical claim since he is saying that happiness comes not through individual pursuit but from helping others. For this assignment, you are going to test this idea. Your research should answer the following question: Research Question: Does helping others, and thus developing compassion, make individuals happy? This assignment has two phases: Phase 1: Conduct original research. Select someone to help for 5-10 hours. You can choose to volunteer for a group or organization, or you can help someone you know personally who is struggling and in need of help. You will be making observations and recording those observations in field notes. Phase 2: Write a 5-7 pages research paper, in which you discuss the results of your research and arrive at a conclusion answering the research question stated above. Sections Your essay should include the following sections in this order): 1. Introduction (1 paragraph) The purpose of this section is to introduce the paper itself to readers. It follows a traditional introduction format. This section: • Gives a general overview of the topic. Gives an overview of the methods of your research (what you did). Offers your thesis statement (which makes your point about whether or not compassion leads to happiness). Gives a road map for what you will discuss in the essay. . . 2. Literature Review (about 1-2 paragraphs) The purpose of this section is to communicate to readers key ideas from the book that are relevant to the rest of the paper. This section lays the foundation for your research and argument. This section: Summarizes and directly quotes passages from the reading, The Art of Happiness by the Dalai Lama and Cutler, that are important for the rest of the essay . 3. Research Methods (about 3-4 paragraphs) The purpose of this section is to tell readers exactly what you did for your research. It should be detailed and specific so that readers can picture what you did to help someone. This section: Introduces the methods of your research (what you did, who was involved). Describes the setting of the study (where your research took place), and who was involved. Remember that this is a descriptive, not an interpretive, account of the setting. Explains what exactly you did to help your identified person persons. Includes your self-observation through your research. This account should include a detailed description of how you felt before and after you volunteered. . o . . 4. Results and Conclusion (about 3-5 paragraphs) The purpose of this section is to develop your argument about the topic. It is essentially a "mini-essay" in which you state your thesis, and then develop that idea with supporting paragraphs. This section: Gives an answer to the above-stated research question (Does helping others, and thus developing compassion, make individuals happy?). Explains WHY you arrived at your answer. Each supporting paragraph should have P, I, and E-a topic sentence (supported reason), evidence/information from your research and the book, and analysis of that information Ends with a short wrap-up paragraph in which you bring the essay to a close. Consider ending with final thoughts, ideas for further research (for example, if you were going to do more research on this topic, what would you do), a plan of action for how to act on your conclusions, or a discussion of the significance of the topic and/or your thesis. NOTE: Be sure to divide your paper into sections using the headings specified above. Things to keep in mind... This assignment asks you to first look, then think, and then reach conclusions. You are conducting your research. However, do not hold yourself to that answer. Let the results Yourself room to be surprised and possibly even change your ideas. Good research often Consider the gray area. Life is complicated and messy. Perhaps your experience was good, but it was also frustrating because you wanted to do more but could not. Or perhaps it made you angry for some reason but was good for other reasons. Explore those complexities in your paper. It will help develop your thinking and writing, but more importantly it will help you understand the gray area in between black and white. Requirements Please include the following items in your writing folder when you submit your final draft: . o Pre-research Reading Note Sheet Research notes Shitty first draft Pre-writing work (data analysis) In-class essay first draft Final draft DUE: 11/16 (as a hard copy in class and on Canvas)

Introduction
There are various strategies to make or to be happy. Happiness is not difficult to achieve,
but rather, it is a good way that man must have to be. Happiness is a good thing that everyone
must fulfill in his/her life. One way that makes us happy is to help those who are homeless.
Being helpful is not hard to do, it is one of the best ways that one of us must do unto others in
many ways that is considered as a right way of giving or sharing. Helping does not mean
donating large amounts of money, joining an NGO or going to the other part of the world to help
those who need us the most. There are other types of help such as helping an older person cross
the sidewalk, planting a tree, not throwing the trash on the floor or pushing the car of a stranger
because it does not start. Helping others does not require that you have to travel half the world to
feed a person in the middle of a poor country, we can help our neighbor with a heavy piece of
furniture, give advice to someone who really needs it, these are the real ways in which we can
really provide a service to the people around us. It is believed that our brain processes the
information of "good actions" and to grasp that what we have done is right gives us a reward that
consists of the release of certain hormones that give us that feeling of wellbeing and fullness that
accompanies certain beneficial acts that we can perform. Helping the homeless makes happiness
will be discussed in this papers with a valid and full explanation from the research made
throughout this study.

to be happy which is in everybody's inclination. As we go throughout this research, even from
the book by Dalai, we will surely realize that realize that happiness is an extremely troublesome
term to characterize since individuals can be glad for various reasons. Thusly, these reasons will
create satisfaction in a few people and not in others. So we can state that satisfaction will rely
upon the recognition that every individual has against specific occasions or circumstances. "We
think we recognize what joy is yet we think that it's hard to discover a definition that
comprehends the situation for everybody. Happiness is an inclination that is never totally
accomplished. This happens in light of the fact that, for the most part, satisfaction is
accomplished in the wake of having achieved an end or reason sought after. Be that as it may, by
the by, after fulfilled this end, definitely, others emerge for the individuals who battle and
endeavor to come back to accomplish satisfaction. Happiness is found through adoration,
fondness, closeness, and empathy. Not exclusively do people have the ability to be glad, yet in
addition, the Dalai Lama trusts that every human normally encapsulates a delicate quality.
Dalai Lama underpins this hypothesis by saying 'Buddha nature', the Buddhist principle,
yet additionally saying that delicacy isn't just influenced by religion yet in regular day to day
existence. With delicacy comes hostility, be that as it may. Individuals contend that hostility is
the prevailing conduct for humankind. Accordingly, the Dalai Lama says, "outrage, savagery,
and ...
