Eng. 301A/ Buckowski / Spring 2017 Formal Essay: Personal Identity: Our Language Journeys and the Influences of Others Polished drafts (600-word minimum) are due on Thursday, November 16 (50 points). Final papers are due on Tuesday, November 28 by class time (200 points). Please submit both to Dropbox; there will be separate folders for Formal Essay DRAFT and for Formal Essay FINAL. Make sure to put them in the correct folder. Once the essays are graded, you will be able to view the professor’s comments on Dropbox under Markup. The final paper word count requirement is 750-900 words; the word count does not include the works cited page. Any essays outside of this range will have points deducted. Please use MLA format: class header, title, Times New Roman 12pt. font, double spaced, etc. Please see The Little Seagull Handbook page 161 for a sample paper; please use this format. A works cited page, in-text citations, and utilization of the Quote Sandwich Template are also required. ***************************************************************************************** “So, if you want to really hurt me, talk badly about my language. Ethic identity is twin skin to linguistic identity—I am my language.”—Gloria Anzaldúa “Who is to say that robbing a people of their language is less violent than war?”-–Ray Gywn Smith “The fearsomeness mistakenly attributed to me in public places often has a perilous flavor.”—Brent Staples Our latest readings are examples of exemplary (serving as a model) writing and have discussed the authors’ language journeys and how personal identity is a culmination of: our cultural influences, the places we’ve been, our friends, our ethnic backgrounds, and the different work environments and social circles in which we navigate. As a child, Anzaldúa was punished because she spoke Spanish in class. Staples was viewed as a “fearsome entity” by some and had to adopt a physical language of safety in order keep those around him calm and himself safe. Like all of us, their identities were clearly influenced by these factors. In this essay, please discuss your personal identity and how language and all the factors discussed* have influenced that identity. Although the readings demonstrate instances of negative experiences and journeys, yours may be positive or a combination of both. *Personal identity is a culmination of: our cultural influences, the places we have been, our friends, our ethnic backgrounds, and the different work environments and social circles in which we navigate. The following questions are intended to help inspire and guide you: How has knowing more than one language influenced your personal identity? Has there been a particular person or group that has influenced, helped, or hindered you? Has being multilingual been beneficial to you? Has learning a new language been a burden? Has it opened new doors? How has your mother culture influenced your identity? What made you decide to learn a second language? If you were raised bilingual, how has juggling multiple languages shaped your identity? If you’ve lived in or traveled to many places, how have these different areas changed you and influenced your identity? From our class readings, please include 2-4 quotes using the Quote Sandwich Template. Keep the length of the quotes under two-typed lines. In-text citations and a works cited page are also required. Make sure to incorporate keywords and phrases in the essay. Also, remember that this is a formal essay, so much more is expected. You are responsible for everything listed above, but this checklist might be helpful: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Clarity: is the essay understandable? (If you’re not sure, try reading it out loud.) _____ Thesis Statement: do you have a clear thesis statement? (If you’re not sure, try to highlight it.) ______ Punctuation: is punctuation used correctly? ________ Subject-verb agreement (SVA): do your subjects and verbs agree? ______ Significant Words: did you include significant words and phrases? _____ Plagiarism: did you check Dropbox for your originality report? _______

Identity: Culture, Society and Language
“I will no longer feel ashamed for existing.” – Gloria Anazaldúa

Though we may not notice it, there are many aspects of our life that make up part of our
identity. We tend to assume that our personalities and self-perception is constructed only by our
internal rationalizations. However, many external factors, particularly those which have followed
us throughout our life, will have also have a determining influence in our identities. These
aspects of our lives are rarely noticed; it is until we find ourselves deeply questioning our history
and our personalities that we can pick up on the situational cues that have shaped us. Almost
everyone will go through that path of exploration, at some point in their lives. Being exposed to a
different culture or a different area can sometimes trigger this type of examination. Personally, I
did not begin to analyze these elements until I found myself immersed into a different culture. I
was able to notice, though, that my cultural background, language and my social interactions had
a profound impact of my identity and, immediately, I became protecti...
