eighteenth century. The journey towards the full liberation of the relatively marginalized people
in the nation, especially those of color, has faced myriads of impediments. Abraham Lincoln and
James Hammond are some of the historical figures who played pivotal roles in shaping the
debate on slavery during the nineteenth century when the calls for abolition had taken ground.
Lincoln was staunchly inclined towards abolition while Hammond favored the continuance of
slavery. Each of them supported their claims through several platforms, in particular through
speeches and writings. "Abraham Lincoln Explains the Free-Labor System" is a historical
document in which the president explains his sentiments on why free labor would be more
beneficial than slave labor, while Hammond refutes the abolitionist argument in "The Proslavery
