Introduction
Coca-Cola Company is one of the giants that control a substantial share of the soda industry in
America. Over the recent five years, the soda industry has been experiencing astonishing
changes which have affected the external environment of companies. This paper will be
analyzing Coca-Cola’s external environment using Porter’s five forces which will help in
highlighting the company’s strength and weaknesses. Porter’s five forces model will allow a
closer look at the company and how it is performing in the Soda industry. The paper will also
give a better grasp of the external environment through an understanding of the internal
environment based on analysis of key financial ratios.

There is a medium pressure on Coca-cola as there are relatively low entry barriers into the soda
industry that is there is no consumer switching cost. For Coca-Cola, it is not seen as just a
beverage company but as a brand as it can be seen in their substantial market share that the
company controls for a long time and has loyal customers who are not ready to try new products.
For Coca-Cola is controls substantial market share and the margins between Coca-Cola and other
giant companies is 15% to 20% this shows that customers are loyal and it is difficult for new
entrants to persuade retailers to sell new products (IBIS world, 2017).
According to IBIS world (2017) industry report, it shows that there are significant entry barriers
which include high capital investments, concentration in the industry, market saturation and
declining demand for soda. For new entrants, they have to differentiate themselves in the
industry by offering products that taste better compared to the existing products or be willing to

invest heavily in marketing to secure a position in the market and build a brand for themselves
