Lifestyle diseases are those health problems that occur in an individual in response to
changes in lifestyle. Therefore, these are diseases linked to the way people live their life. The
causes of lifestyle diseases are certain habits, behaviors, and practices such as poor eating,
inactivity or smoking. Lifestyle diseases are also caused by factors that cannot be controlled such
as age, gender, and heredity (Ezzati, 2013).
Asthma is one of the genetic and lifestyle diseases. It’s a chronic lung disease that
inflames and narrows the airways. It involves variable and recurring signs, reversible airflow
obstruction, and bronchospasm. The main signs are wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and
difficulty in breathing. The occurrence of these symptoms depends on an individual but may
occur a few times a day or in a couple of weeks, where they’re worse at night or after an
exercise. Some individuals with asthma don’t have any sign unless in response to triggers while
others have marked and persistent symptoms. There are many types of asthma whereby each is
associated with the trigger. They include; exercise-induced, allergy-induced childhood asthma,
occupational asthma, and chronic asthma (Beasley et al., 2015).
The risk factors associated with the asthma are the environmental factors and habits as
well as the genetic factor. The environmental risk factors connected with asthma cases and
exacerbation includes allergens, air pollution, and chemicals agents. Habits of smoking pose a
higher risk to asthma development. Air pollution also contributes toward asthma development.
The exposure to the volatile organic compounds also triggers asthma. Asthma is also passed
