EN102 Essay 3 Literary Analysis Rough draft November 6 Final draft November 13 Ursala Le Guin has said that the story “The Ones who Walk Away from Omelas” is an allegory. 1. symbolic work: a work in which the characters and events are to be understood as representing other things and symbolically expressing a deeper, often spiritual, moral, or political meaning" 2. symbolic expression of meaning in story: the symbolic expression of a deeper meaning through a story or scene acted out by human, animal, or mythical characters Scholar Jerre Collins further explains the allegorical nature of Le Guin's story: Her story is about a society's use of a scapegoat, a pharmakos, to keep the rest of the society happy; and the dilemma of the American conscience seems to be twofold: we cannot renounce the exploitation of others that makes possible our high standard of living, nor can we renounce the scapegoat-motif that justifies our comfortable life. By challenging us to renounce both, "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas" takes up what Hans Robert Jauss calls the "socially formative function that belongs to literature as it competes with other arts and social forces in the emancipation of mankind from its natural, religious, and social bonds" (45). The characters, setting and events in this story can be seen of critiques of American society at several levels. Choose one of the following topics, 1. Analyze the theme of the scapegoat in “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omalas.” How do setting, character, and symbols (flute, horses drooz) contribute to this theme? Use quote and summary from the story to support your points. You should also have at least six sources. 2. This story was written by a white American woman in the 60s who was well aware of the inherent racism in American society: poverty, hunger, lack of shelter. Write an essay with an ethical argument. Do you agree or disagree that the American standard of living depends on scapegoating others, in particular African Americans? Why is that wrong? Establish an ethical principle, provide background, and support your argument with evidence. In addition to the story, use at least six sources to support your point. 3. Likewise the story can also be seen as a critique of the American corporate culture, in which 1 percent of the population controls most of the country's wealth. Do you agree or disagree that the American standard of living depends on our exploitation of other cultures? Why is that wrong? Establish an ethical principle, provide background, and support your argument with evidence. In addition to the story, use at least six sources to support your point. In addition to the story, use at least six secondary sources.
