Intro to Anthropology

Hillsborough Community College

Description

The assignment for this course is designed to encourage you to think critically about human and cultural diversity from the vantage of the major subfields of anthropology. There are three options, from which your group will choose one. It is easier if each group member takes on one of the “Steps” in each final assignment option. You are required to complete a report of no more than five double-spaced pages (not including references). The assignment should be turned in as a Microsoft Word document in 12-pt. font with 1-inch margins. Your paper should reference at least three external sources; these may be web-based but should be of an academic nature. Use in-text citations (author and date) formatted in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style (15th Edition) and provide a references cited section at the end of the text, (again in Chicago Manual of Style, 15th Edition format). Your paper will be graded out of 5 total points, according to the following rubric: 1) clearly articulates an understanding of relevant anthropological concepts; 2) demonstrates the ability to apply anthropological concepts to the analysis of a relevant case study, dataset, or issue; 3) supports the analysis with proper citation of relevant sources 4) presents the findings with clarity and professional appearance Four performance levels are defined for each criterion: unacceptable (0), poor (1), marginal (2), satisfactory (3), good (4), and excellent (5). Option #1: Global Commodities: Long-Term Histories and Long-Distance Connections Step 1: Choose a basic foodstuff like sugar, coffee, corn, chocolate, beer, etc. Step 2: Taking an archaeological perspective, research the long-term history of this foodstuff, including its earliest use or domestication, and the circumstances of its transformation into a global commodity. Step 3: Taking the perspective of a cultural anthropologist, analyze the production system for this commodity today. Research where this commodity is grown or produced, who controls and benefits from its production (as well as who may be exploited), and who consumes it. Step 4: From the perspective of a biological anthropologist, consider the implications of the globalized commodification of this foodstuff for human health. Step 5: Generate a report summarizing your findings and substantiating your conclusions using appropriate sources and citations.

Effects of Chocolate on Human Health
Whereas chocolate was widely used as a form of treatment, it is now popularly used as
confectionery, both as a beverage and in the form of solid bars. Its use is now ubiquitous over the
world. However, the widespread use of chocolate has resulted in many significant health effects
for the users, with some being positive and others negative. The first health effect associated
with its use is the lowering of blood pressure1. Chocolate contains flavonols, classified under the
flavonoids, which cause the production of nitric acid one a person has consumed them. The
released nitric oxide then causes the walls of blood vessels to relax causing the smooth flow of
blood and thereby lowering the pressure of blood passing through them2. This is a very great
advantage to most consumers because according to research, they are highly unlikely to become
victims of hypertension. It is, however, imperative to note that even though the low pres...
