ESSAY ASSIGNMENT #3 "Fireside Chats" of The Great Depression This essay will discuss any ONE of the "fireside chats” given by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt during The Great Depression of the 1930s. The essay will explain the theme of the speech, and consider what the "chat" reveals about The United States politically, socially and economically at the time it was given. To access the "chats" go to: http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/fireside.php Limit your choice to any one of the Fireside Chats from 12 March 1933 to 24 June 1938. The later chats concern World War II and are not the central theme of this paper. To write a successful essay, some research will be necessary. At least two secondary sources should be used and cited. Remember, any direct quotes or the paraphrasing of any ideas not your own must be properly footnoted. DUE DATE: Monday, 20 November 2017 AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS (9:30am) Your paper must 3-5 pages (at least 3 full pages of text), be typed, double-spaced, stapled (upper left hand corner), footnoted when and where necessary, and include a bibliography. A cover page is o.k., however it does not count toward the total number of pages required for your paper (same is true for the bibliography). Artwork, fancy binders, acetate covers, and so on, are frowned upon. Your paper must also adhere to all other mechanical requirements as outlined in the syllabus under "VIII.2.b General Mechanical Requirements for all essays”. The Turabian citation format is preferred for all courses in the History Department. All other citation styles or formats will not be accepted for any writing assignments in Oakton history courses. For more info regarding this format: http://www.wisc.edu/writing/Handbook/DocChicago.html or see Rampolla, Chapter 7.

his words carefully trying to use analogies, concrete examples, and simple language. One of

was a bad time for banking because many of them were failing. Many states shuttered the
failing ones.2 This prompted the president to give a fireside chat immediately after taking
office. This speech was broadcast on March 12th, 1933 to sooth the public which had been in
a panic since the Great Depression begun.3 This essay discusses the ‘Fireside Chat on
Banking' given by President Roosevelt. The discussion entails explaining the theme of the
message and its revelation of the economic, political and the social conditions of the United
