Solomon Northup was born to Mintus Northup a freed man who serve the Northup family for
sometime and brother too Joseph Northup. Solomon had a wife, Ann Hampton, and three
children namely Elizabeth, Margret and Alonzo. Solomon is protrayed as a family man who
loved his wife. They owned a farm in Hebron and also did various jobs to make ends meet.
Solomon’s life as a free man before the kidnapping incidence had a significance in showing how
the black people did not get to choose the life of slavery (McQueen). Not all black people were
born into slavery. Some of them were forced into this life without through harsh means and
without their consent.
