Description

Paper will be graded on how well they are organized, and how well they are argued. Your essay should be double spaced, Times Roman font 12 point, and one inch margins.

In a cogent answer discuss the events that led to the American Revolution. Was the battle cry of “liberty” based on economic, political, intellectual, religious, or social issues? In other words, was it a violent reaction from colonists adamantly opposed to taxation and virtual representation by Parliament? Was it the reaction of an angry mob (“ordinary” colonists) that put pressure on an elite class reluctant to wage war? Was it rooted in a deeper cause and linked to notions of English liberties, enlightenment ideas, and the Great Awakening? Was it an organized revolt or simply a misguided, unorganized protest movement that went too far by a handful of colonists overreacting to a few unfortunate events? And finally, was it a worthy cause considering that only one-third of the colonists (patriots) supported it and that it marginalized certain groups of Americans (slaves, women, and Native Americans)?

I. Introduction: Briefly mention the possible motivations that led to the American Revolution. Make sure to state your thesis—that is your argument for why thirteen separate colonies joined together to fight the War of Independence. Discuss what you think the important issue or issues were that compelled the colonists to back the cause, and whether or not that cause was worthy. Take into consideration Jefferson’s words “all men are created equal” in the Declaration of Independence. American Revolution
American Revolution took place in between 1777 to 1783. It was a war to gain
independence from the Britain colonists, who had established their government in the country.
The American troops were assisted by the French army who helped to drive out the British
military, resulting in the victory by the Americans. The increased pressure between the American
colonies and British army and political differences led to a break out of rebellion and war
between the two parties. Contributing factors that led to American Revolution include:
Law enacted by the British government that required printed documents such as
newspapers and legal documents to be charged with tax fees. The act was called stamp act and
was enforced in 1765. Its main aim was to provide funds for the British army. The American
forces were rebellious as they were not put into consideration with the stamp duties collected,
which were highly imposed on them. The act was nullified later when the revolutionary war had
already started (Higginbothamet al, 1978 pg. 6)
A law established by the British army called the Tea Act. This incident made the British
East India firm a monopolist in distributing and selling tea to the American colonies. The act was
enacted after some of the American men sailed on the British ships and caused the tea cargo of

the British army to be damaged in the Boston area. This made the American troops angry and
contributed to the outbreak of the American war.
Coming up with principles and acts which could not be persevered. They were called
Coercive laws. This resulted in the closure of Boston Harbors, and the colonies were required to
provide compensation for the destroyed tea cargos, for it to be reopened. Authorities of the
British army led to more discrimination against the colonies by stretching the Quebec province
borders, which belonged to the colonies. This outraged the American colonies, and their need to
obtain their rights and freedom increased leading to revolutionary war.
Two continental meetings were held by twelve representatives and decided on how to
respond to the laws that could not be tolerated enacted by the British army. They agreed of
resisting goods from Britain and products from America were prohibited from being exported to
the British territories. This is one of the events that led to increased pressure thus leading to
revolutionary war (Royster et al., pg. 21)
