Introduction
The Ocean Cleanup foundation announced the development of a groundbreaking floating
equipment that would collect plastic waste from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. With a budget
of $2.2 million from crowdfunding, its founder Boyan Slat indicated that the nonprofit was aiming
to clean plastics from the Great Pacific Patch stretch of 100 kilometers. If successful, this project
will be beneficial in eradicating plastic pollution as part of the effort to clean 42% of the stretch’s
plastic contamination in 10 years. However, the project has many disadvantages, and according to
the oceanographers and biologist, the feasibility study of the project does not address key
ecological concerns.
This project by the Ocean Cleanup has many advantages to the ecosystem of the ocean.
First, it can go 50% deeper into the ocean and collect the plastic floats that are harvested, sorted
and then processed in a collection section waiting to be collected by boats after every six weeks
