Dr. Zampogna-Krug HIST 105 Fall 2017 Immigrants/Refugees in Ancient History Essay Total Possible Points: 50 Choose ONE of the following options for your research essay: 1. Climate Change and Migration: Using ancient Egypt as a case study, examine the connections between climate change and migration. In what ways did the climate change in Egypt after 3000 B.C.E.? What kind of migratory patterns developed as a result of this climate change? 2. The Role of Hegira in the History of Islam: Hegira often means “flight” or “to flee.” It can also refer to a broader migration of Muslims from one place to another. Compare the first notable hegira (to Axum) to the current Syrian refugee crisis. What were Muslims fleeing in 615 C.E. when they left for Axum? What are Syrian Muslims fleeing today? Also examine the differences in reception. How were early Muslims received in Axum? How are Syrian refugees received in some countries today? 3. Foreigners and Barbarians in the Ancient World: How did some of the large empires of the past deal with foreigners in their borders? What was their attitude toward foreigners? Is there anything that the United States can learn from the experiences of these ancient empires? For this question choose either China (during Han and Tang dynasties) or the Roman Empire as your focus area. For each of these options you will need at least 5 scholarly sources (more is better). The sources can be books, documentaries, academic articles, reputable news reports, and/or primary sources (i.e. letters, personal testimonies, declarations, etc.). You will be able to find all you need through the Bankier Library. They have a multitude of books, articles, and documentaries that relate to these three topics. I recommend sticking with these library databases: 1. Academic Search Premier 2. LexisNexis Academic 3. Ancient and Medieval History Online Other useful sources: 1. HIST 105 Readings Packet 2. World Civilizations I LibGuide (link on Canvas) 3. Global Citizenship Project LibGuide (link on Canvas) 4. Your textbook Requirements: • 4-6 pages. "The decline of Late Bronze Age civilization as a possible response to climatic change." Climatic Change 4.2 (1982): 173-198. The article hypothesizes that the decline of Late Bronze Age and the associated large scale migrations can be associated with climate change. The drought that ensued prompted people to relocate to other areas in search of more favorable locations. This article is essential in further understanding the impacts of drought and other related disasters attributed to climate change on ancient people. Primary source: a map of Ancient Egypt The map provides an overview of Egypt and the settlements that can be used to understand the impacts of climate change on Egyptian based on the location. Most of the settlements were located on River Nile and as a result, people located in these regions were directly affected by the floods that occurred as a result of climate change.
