The term leadership has evolved over the years because of its definition as the
capacity to translate vision into reality. In this term paper we will be able to look at various
types of leadership and how it affects management of an organization.
There are several theories that have been used to help us understand the term leadership.
Some of the theories include the great man theory that describes leaders as people who have
extraordinary abilities and heroic capabilities (Bruce, 2006). What the theory suggests is that
actually people are endowed with great characteristics and heroic capabilities. Then there is
the trait theory that describes people as specific characteristics that enable the person to be a
good leader. This theory has been used by many scholars because it provides measurable and
testable characteristics such as virtues, efficiency, psychological, and cognitive factors.
However according to Bass (1990) the focus of these two theories is on one individual. In
real sense leadership can be provided by a group of people who complete the tasks and
processes of leadership but do so as a team.
On the hand, one is said to be a great leader if they are able to bring in the right
followers or employees in the organization. This is because they will support their vision for
the organization they are leading. A good leader is therefore said to be one that can be able to
not only issue orders but inspire people to be more like them and the same people to share in
their vision. This term discusses the characteristics of a good leader, the leadership styles, and
how leadership affects management.
Characteristics of a good leader
Great leadership is seen as a critical factor in the management of any organization.

A good leader is self motivated he knows that no one will do it unless he does it. He or she
has the passion and desire to excel and become better each and every day. A good example is
Jack ma of Alibaba group in China, despite failing severally he was able to pick himself up
and build his company from scratch and today he is a force to reckon with in the business
world.
Leaders hold themselves and people around them in high regard than most both on a
personal and professional manner because they know that in order to achieve higher
standards they have to have strong values and hold themselves accountable for their words
and actions. A good example is the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddaffi he was able to
come with policies that ensured his country got free basic primary needs like shelter, food,
education and health care.
A leader is a go getter for him there is no such thing as impossible he will do
everything within his means to achieve what he wants. A good example is the current
president of the United States of America Donald J. Trump; he was able to excel despite
everything to become a multimillionaire.
Another quality of a good leader is accountability. A good leader is able to account
for all the resources that are under his care. He is also accountable for every word he utters
and for everything he does. A good example is would be a bank manager since he is in charge
of the branch he ensures that every coin in the bank is accounted for and does agree to shady
dealings.
A leader is courageous this means he will make unpopular decisions which may not
auger well with everyone in the company. For example you will encounter a director in his
company who is very strict about reporting time to work.
