Why Do People Want to Live in the City?
The movement of many people from the country to cities is seen not only in the U.S but
all over the world. Traditionally, in Britain, the push to live in urban areas was mainly due to
economic reasons that included better wages in the city, higher chances of getting a job, and
better living conditions including good schools and better healthcare for families. These factors
have not changed much in the modern state of affairs in the U.S and elsewhere, but new factors
have come into play with time. Political and economic growth, as well as the social stratification,
has led to the increased movement of people from the rural areas to cities whereby development
is seen as being fast and opportunities being abundant.
The first reason for people wanting to live in cities could be said to be the settlement
according to social, ethnic, and racial groups. For instance, during immigration, the immigrants
often settled in the same area in huge towns and cities. An example is the wave of immigrants in
the 19th century including many people of Hispanic or African-American descent. Due to the
discrimination in the U.S, such immigrants were more encouraged to stay together as
communities and protect them from the discriminatory landowners (Fischer 55). Also, the
immigration groups that came later had no land in the U.S. Similarly, immigrants from Europe
who came to find jobs in the U.S and provide for their families back in Europe settled in urban
places where it was easy to get paid labor jobs in construction sites and industries.
