Classmates paper After reading the case, I concluded that Jared Remy was a very disturbed young man. He had some serious issues that he had to contend with, such as a violent and defiant personality, psychological issues, control issues, and drug abuse problems. Remy’s friends described him as being sweet and generous at moment and bursting into a rage the next moment. His violent anger and aggression held no bounds. He intimidated and abused men and women alike. For instance, he belittled his pregnant girlfriend because of her weight gain, and began to verbally abuse her. Another time he tried to push this same girlfriend from a moving vehicle while she was still pregnant with his child. During another incident, Remy smashed a beer bottle over his friend’s head out of a fit of jealousy. Remy even had a reputation for lashing out at police officers as the officers prevented Remy from further abusing his victims (Moskowitz, 2014). On one hand, I believe that Remy should be held accountable for his actions. On the other hand, I believe that his family’s fame and wealth interfered with the criminal justice system and its responsibility to protect citizens from monsters, such as Jared Remy. The Remy family had the means to secure a high-priced seasoned criminal defense attorney with judicial connections as well. I believe it is for this reason, Remy always received a slap on the hand, if you will, for his criminal actions. I think all the years of coddling, protecting, and making excuses for their son only served to encourage Remy’s uncontrollable behavior. Amazingly, Remy’s father admitted to knowing the number of his son’s criminal charges and the long history of his son’s violent anger issues and lack of self-control, yet failed to get his son any kind of long-term psychological help (Moskowitz, 2014). Within the judicial system, it appeared that Remy’s long-time defense attorney had the ability to garner special favor from judges for Jared Remy. Remy’s history of violent behavior and psychological issues appeared to be of little consequence to the court system, since judges repeatedly let Remy off with nothing more than probation and Remy’s promise to stay out of trouble. Regardless of Remy’s criminal actions and criminal history, judges continued to go easy on Remy by extending his probation or coming up with creative solutions for Remy to avoid jail time, such as moving back home and observing a curfew. (Moskowitz, 2014). Unfortunately, these remedies or tactics were extremely unsuccessful in curtailing Remy’s violent behavior. In the end, a young woman lost her life to the violent rage of Jared Remy (Moskowitz, 2014). In cases such as the Jared Remy case, I think there should be some kind of sanction against defense attorneys and judges who blatantly fail in their obligations to provide equal justice for all citizens, regardless of an individual’s socioeconomic standing. In the Remy case procedural law failed at so many levels; along with several keys players in the criminal justice system. The key participant in Remy continued criminal behavior I believe was the judge. Since Remy would never opt for a jury trial, the judge had sole discretion on his case outcome. Sighting the numerous times that Remy was allowed to proceed without a criminal conviction. Even when violating probation the judge failed to hold Remy accountable. When prosecutors would argue for confinement, Remy was still released. When Remy's assaultive behavior continued, the judge continued to allow him to go free. I believe that the judge in Remy's case lead the way to murder by not holding him accountable. If the judge had stepped in even once to incarcerate Remy, this might have showed he was not “untouchable”. Even given the fact that a psychologist deemed him to have a disorder. When Remy showed that he refused to take medication because he did not want to be labeled “damaged goods”. This showed have been an eye opener that other action needed to be taken to address his criminal behavior. Since there was no jury ever involved in Remy's cases they are deemed not responsible. The prosecutors always attempted to gain a higher level of punishment; they are not responsible. I believe that the defense attorney is also not responsible for his clients actions. Although he successfully argued not to confine his client, that was his job to defend. The judge had the ultimate authority to attempt change the outcome of Remy's murder charge. At any point that judge could have imposed a sentence that would have held Remy accountable, instead of a slap on the hand.

REMY CASE STUDY

Remy was a violent and psychotic spoilt rich kid who had the power of law in his pocket, the law
always seemed to bend to his side in that the judge would always regard all evidence brought to
him as circumstantial and the only proof of a crime was in the witnesses statements and they
were not available which led to him dismissing the case. Remy would use witness intimidation
and manipulation to make sure that they do not testify against him which is in clear violation of
