Introduction

Water pollution involves the contamination of water bodies like the rivers, lakes, oceans
and even the groundwater. Pollutants are discharged into the water bodies directly or indirectly
which causes degradation of the environment. The water becomes unhealthy for human
consumption as it contains harmful substances. On the other hand, pollutants are the substances
which are harmful if taken in excess. In today’s world, there have been high levels of water
pollution with more than 20% lacking disease-free drinking water. The issue of water pollution is
on the increase as more industries are polluting the available water resources. The paper will thus
discuss the different problems which cause water pollution and how to control them (Keller,
2012).

Water pollution involves contamination of water sources with substances which are
caused by human activities. The increase in the level of industrialization has led to high levels of

wastewaters in the environment. The water comes from different sources of sewage, bathing,
washing clothes and even dishes. The growth in water pollutions has made about 20% of the
world population to lack clean drinking water. Currently, waterborne diseases kill approximately
2 million people a year, the most of the deaths are for children under five years. Water pollution
enhances the growth of waterborne illnesses which causes death to the affected people (Keller,
2012).

The Chesapeake Bay is an estuary in the state of Maryland; it lies inland from the
Atlantic Ocean. Due to its strategic location, a lot of companies dispose of their waste in this
