Running Head: JUNK FOOD

Introduction
In recent decades, the amount of junk food consumed on a daily basis has risen considerably.
Junk food comes in many forms, as snacks and other high-calorie edibles and also n the form of
fast food. Junk foods can be found everywhere from your nearest local convenient store to
shelves in supermarkets, in automatic vending machines and even in kitchen shelves and
refrigerators. These junk foods are a cause for concern for many health practitioners and healthconscious individuals. For instance, a parent may worry about their child's access to junk food
from vending machines in school or on the streets. Eating a lot of junk food puts an individual at
significant risk of various food-related illnesses. As such, numerous campaigns have been
launched in an attempt to curb the problem.
Different theories have come about to try and explain this phenomenon. Some people will cite
the cheapness of many junk foods as one of the most significant reasons why people prefer to eat
junk food. Others may argue that how we live our lives these days has created a situation in
which it is easier to eat junk food than it is to eat whole homemade food. Others prefer to blame
it on American, or more precisely, capitalist consumer culture, which is responsible for excesses
in both production and consumption of products. Any of these theories or all of them combined
could explain why so much junk food is consumed today.
However, all these people agree that junk food is a big problem. Millions of gallons of
carbonated beverages and millions of tonnes of junk food are consumed annually in America and
even more globally. Even in developing countries, where the problem is supposed to be less
acute, incidences of food-related illnesses are on the rise. There is a high correlation between
junk food consumption and the incidences of chronic lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and
obesity. Moreover, the incidences of such illnesses among the younger generations are on the
rise. Despite continuous efforts by various groups and governments around the world to inform
their citizenry and regulate junk food, little has changed. In this paper, I explore junk food from
many angles. First, I define junk food and then proceed to describe its usage in the US. Further, I
look at it many impacts on its consumers' health. Finally, I will look at how we can try to solve
the problem of junk food.
Section I: Definition
There are many ways one can define junk food. In one definition, the one used by most people,
junk food refers to food that is enjoyable and fun to eat but has little to no additional nutritional
value. Going by this definition, most people would consider snacks, fast foods, cakes, sweets or
any other food that isn't served warm on a plate to be junk food. However, thi...
