The principate system is a term given to refer to the first period in the Roman Empire
which was marked from the 27 BC when Augustus was the leader to 284 AD when the third
crisis occurred. The main characteristic of this duration was that only a single emperor reigned
which made a difference from the Roman Republic system. The latter was a system that from its
heyday in 500BC-100BC has its basis in the rule of law and a constitution that was not written
but consisting of three essential elements of democracy, oligarchy, and monarchy. The three
components gave Rome a great strength because everything was done in the right way as guided
by the constitution.
