American born Chinese is a graphical novel written by Gene Luen, the book was first
published in 2006. The book has a very interesting story where cartoon characters are used
through the whole book. The book has three stories, the first story talks about Jing Wang who
migrated to America as a child and tries to fit into the culture. The second story in the book tells
of a Chinese legend. The last story tells about Danny who has a Chinese cousin, the cousin visits
severally and he displays characters like those of the country where he comes from. Since the
first release of the book, it has continually received positive criticism and several awards.
In 2006 the book was shortlisted in the final list of books nominated for the national book
award, the book received an award for the best comic. In 2007 the book received rewards for the
best graphic album, the book has received rewards from the Chinese library for the years 2006
and 2007. There are other several lists where the book has appeared such as top ten graphical
novels for young adults, in the times magazine among top ten comics of the year 2007. The book
novelist won the Harvey award in 2007 for being the best cartoonist and creative work.
The book explains the struggles of the Chinese who live in America, whether they were
born there or are immigrants. The Chinese try hard to fit the American lifestyle, but the book
gives them motivation to live a comfortable life as it proves the struggles are there, but they
should not stress on them. Apart from the Chinese living there, there are other students who
study there the book it used to motivate the students and to give them the yearn to learn more.
