The term Network Neutrality has been controversial globally with numerous countries
implementing it. It is typically established as the internet service providers (ISPs) principle that
should have an equal treatment for all online content without slowing down some traffic sources
blocking other websites intentionally or letting corporations to pay for privileged treatment on
the internet. This means that all the internet connection is supposed to treat every service and
websites equally. A good example is the charges for the email and Facebook or other social
media platform. They should be equal rather that one charging more because they have not paid
for the preference treatment (Musacchio et al., 2009).
This concept is also applicable to the organizations that offer such services. The internet
services providers should ensure that their services are delivered equally as other companies and
their services not overcharged or even blocked from their users. In some other cases, they are
slowed down to discourage traffic.
Additionally, the Network Neutrality encompasses the
prevention of the treatment by the ISP’s according to several different concepts such as mode of
communication, the application being used by the consumer, contents being accessed, the
platform and the user in general. Every person approves conversely, that there should be specific
exclusions and that at some instances, the traffic should be discriminated and filtered, and these
include the times when there are spams, network congestion, and other legal purposes.
The issue has been controversial because different people share diverse opinions on the
concept in general. The pros and cons of the network neutrality are also many and almost equal
making it. The concept has been known to boost the innovation and the competition on the
internet; this is because every traffic is given equal opportunities in the access to the internet.
However, other people agree that there is no need for the network neutrality because the internet
is already fine (Economides, 2008).
