Application: Using the Data/Information/Knowledge/Wisdom Continuum

Have you ever gone online to search for a journal article on a specific topic? It is amazing to see the large number of journals that are available in the health care field. When you view the library in its entirety, you are viewing untapped data. Until you actually research for your particular topic, there is little structure. Once you have narrowed it down, you have information and once you apply the information, you have knowledge. Eventually, after thoughtful research and diligent practice, you reach the level of wisdom—knowledge applied in meaningful ways.

Are there areas in your practice that you believe should be more fully explored? The central aims of nursing informatics are to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom. This continuum represents the overarching structure of nursing informatics. In this Assignment, you develop a research question relevant to your practice area and relate how you would work through the progression from data to information, knowledge, and wisdom.

To prepare:

Review the information in Figure 6–2 in Nursing Informatics and the Foundation of Knowledge.

Develop a clinical question related to your area of practice that you would like to explore.

Consider what you currently know about this topic. What additional information would you need to answer the question?

Using the continuum of data, information, knowledge, and wisdom, determine how you would go about researching your question.

Explore the available databases in the Walden Library. Identify which of these databases you would use to find the information or data you need.

Once you have identified useful databases, how would you go about finding the most relevant articles and information?

Consider how you would extract the relevant information from the articles.

How would you take the information and organize it in a way that was useful? How could you take the step from simply having useful knowledge to gaining wisdom?

Write a 3- to 4-page paper that addresses the following:

Summarize the question you developed, and then relate how you would work through the four steps of the data, information, knowledge, wisdom continuum. Be specific.

Identify the databases and search words you would use.

Relate how you would take the information gleaned and turn it into useable knowledge.

Can informatics be used to gain wisdom? Describe how you would progress from simply having useful knowledge to the wisdom to make decisions about the information you have found during your database search. (include a title page, an introduction, a summary, and a reference page)

Introduction
Information technology is reforming the field of healthcare with a plethora of devices,
software, and new techniques. This reform has particularly impacted nurses, hence the reason
why healthcare information and data is usually dubbed ‘nursing informatics.’ Typically, nursing
informatics is utilized in practice scenarios to assist plan and implement data, information,
knowledge, and wisdom. Furthermore, this continuum of data, information, knowledge, and
wisdom depicts how nurses utilize specifics to make rational decisions as well as provide quality
and affordable healthcare services to patients. This continuum also offers to understand for how
nursing informatics assist in various degrees of decision-making, understanding, and evidencebased practice.
Clinical Question
The clinical question that is related to my area of practice and will be used in this paper is
what is the prevalence of dementia among the elderly people in the United States? Dementia is
an illness that entails the loss of memory and other cognitive elements. Statistics cite that the
elderly population in the United States, particularly those over 65 years, is projected to increase
from about 38 million today to over 75 million in 2010. With this skyrocketing increase in the
number of senior citizens, prevention, treatment, and management of dementia is critical.
Typically, dementia is an illness of specific concern since the deterioration in memory, and other
essential cognitive functions that describe this illness also results in a loss of independent role
that has a broad-ranging effect on patients, their families, and also the overall healthcare system
in the United States (McGonigle, Mastrian, 2014).

Approximations of the occurrence of dementia vary significantly by the age group on
which the approximations are founded. Essentially, occurrence among individuals over 85 years,
for instance, is probably to be substantively higher than approximations grounded on those
individuals who are 65 years and above. Moreover, prevalence information is usually grouped
more widely or more intently than dementia. For example, the National Institutes of Health h
(NIH) considers dementia under the group of Serious Mental Illness whereas the Centers for
Disease and Prevention (CDC) regards occurrence data for particular causes of dementia,
specifically Alzheimer’s disease.
The data on the occurrence of Alzheimer’s show an increasing occurrence. Beginning at
age 65, the susceptibility of developing the illness increases every five years. This means that by
the age of 80 years and above, approximately 40% of individuals will portray signs and
symptoms of Alzheimer’s diseases. A recent meta-analysis cites global occurrence of dementia
from all causes to be between 4% and 8% of adults above 60 years (Plassman, et al. 2007).
