Running head: CATCH 22 ACTOR- Milo Minderbinder Catch 22 Actor-Milo Minderbinder Name Institution Date CATCH 22 ACTOR-MILO MINDERBINDER 2 Introduction Catch 22 is a story about an airman in America during the 2nd World War and his attempts to survive the insanities of the war. The title of the book was initially Catch-18 and involved a United States man belonging to the bomber group situated on the Island of Mediterranean. The man believed that the military was out to kill him and the people surrounding him were insane, so he used the book to try and get out flying or rather avoid the suicidal thoughts. The book took the author, Joseph Heller, seven years to be written where he reflected his experiences with the military by seeing them as mad. The characters in this book played a great role in bringing out the purpose of the book. They were Yossarian, Doc Daneeka, Colonel Cathcart, Scheisskopf, Captain Aardvark, Major Major Major Major, Nately and Milo Minderbinder. However, this essay focusses on the importance and symbolic importance of one of the actors, Milo Minderbinder. Milo Minderbinder plays the most important role in the classy book. He served as a mess officer for Yossarian who was obsessed with the idea of purchasing and selling his stock at a profit and did not have allegiance to any person or anything. Discussion Milo played a critical role in the novel as a whole and assuming that he was eradicated from the story, the novel could have many gaps such that the story cannot be whole without the character. Milo met his Yossarian for the first time when he received a letter from Doc Daneeka entitling him to the whole lot of fruits and fruit juices he wanted due to the fact that to the fact CATCH 22 ACTOR-MILO MINDERBINDER 3 that he had a liver condition. The letter seemed fascinating to Milo and he tried to convince Yossarian to partner with him in the sale of fruits in order to make profits. A company owned by Milo by the name M and M Enterprises was born and it was one of the major companies globally. So from this, we can derive that Milo was a business-minded person and he was talented in that sector of business. He was able to run a very successful enterprise and managed to keep track of all the shipments for his business. Milo was brilliant as seen in his success in business though he was filled with selfish interests. From the story, he cheated his partners that ‘everyone has a share' while in the real sense he was trying to get all to himself by bending the rules to his own benefits. Milo’s character was most defined by greedy. Although he was talented in the field of business, he abused this by letting greed take over him. From the story, it is seen that the business started as an honest venture to feed his people with the best food. However, with time, the venture turned out to be a global syndicate with its goods being carried by army planes to their respective markets. His greedy nature drove him to bomb his own premises for profits, conspiring with the Germans, raising the price of food till people starved, sell food which is not edible to people and to the point of abandoning his friends when they wanted help upon hearing of a chance to make a profit. What surprised many is that the guy did not see himself as evil or corrupt. This is because he claimed to live his life in a morally upright way which according to him raising the profit of goods meant to help people was a moral code. He saw everything in point of view of the syndicate and he believed in securing and utilizing all assets of the nation without caring about the repercussions of such actions. CATCH 22 ACTOR-MILO MINDERBINDER 4 He represented a symbol of ruthless capitalism. He was obtaining the best goods at low prices and made the finest profits. However, he violated the boundaries of military and capitalism. By running his business all the time-barred him from having time to get involved in his missions. Despite all this, the military, people, and the other states still bowed to his wishes: This indicated that people respond to money and not good deeds. His ability to make money off his friends and enemies together will him being willing to support whatever makes a profit, takes into advantage the full lack of ideology in the novel. His support to allow his own premises to be bombed showed that he completely disregarded the sides drawn by the war, and the willingness of the people to pay to be bombed showed that he was not alone in putting a high value on money. Conclusion In conclusion, this character is generally a greedy person who does not care about anybody else but himself. This was manifested in his hunger to make profits without caring of what will happen to people who cannot afford his insanely expensive goods. However, his ability to be successful in business shows that he was brilliant that is why he was able to put his business ideas into practice and emerge successfully all over the world.
