PART 4:
After you have completed all of the Assignments, write a 300–500-word reflection on what
you have learned and what questions you may still have.
I have learned that risk factors for criminality has to do with an individuals psychology.
Behavioral disorders, lack of education and personal temperament are products of several factors
of behavior and environment and can result in criminal behavior. Reasons behind deviant and
delinquent behavior can vary in each case and can be extremely complex and involve many
factors. For example a child, who was born in deviant and destructive environment may be
predisposed to criminal activity however if that individual receives an education and some
amount of support, there is nothing antisocial in that child's behavior. This proves that genetics
alone cannot determine an individual's inclination to criminal behavior. Circumstances that can
influence an individual into a high criminal risk group are financial problems, low social status
and genetics that lead to some mental disorders.
There are two approaches to criminal behavior, psychological and sociological. In the
psychological approach, personality drives behavior within individuals and criminal behavior
can result from a dysfunctional mental process. Also the psychological approach defines
normality by the current social norm and what that society considers as acceptable. The
sociological approaches examines criminal behavior from a purely sociological point of view. In
this approach criminal behavior is influenced by a mix of social, political and economic factors.
Criminals are not viewed as bad people, and focus is on the context of an individual's particular
situation. Amongst other factors, race, environment, education and family can determine why a
person is influenced into criminal or delinquent activities.
Biological theories propose that delinquent behavior is directly related to a flaw in
individual’s biological makeup. This theory consists of a three part structure of the id, the ego
and the superego. The id consist of our basic instincts and primal needs, like food and sleep and
is centered on instant gratification. The ego sets boundaries for the id and the superego focuses
on filtering the judgement of a situation through a structure of morality.

PART 1. After completing the readings, answer the following questions:
1.Describe the biological and psychological factors that contribute to crime and deviance
within society today.
Biological and psychological factors can predispose an individual to antisocial behavior.
These factors include poor self-control, lack of impulse control, aggression, lack of empathy, and
poor reasoning skills.
2.What does twin behavior tell you about the causes of criminal behavior?
The twin study dis based on the study of twins raised in the same family environment. This
study can be used to determine the contributions of genetic factors, linking the shared or
unshared environment to the detailed individual differences.
3.What is the difference between MZ and DZ twins?
Monozygotic twin pairs (MZ twins), are the identical twins. They are one hundred percent
similar as they split from the single embry...
