Description

Disasters most often are unpredictable, and they vary in type and magnitude when they happen. Many companies have some disaster recovery strategies in place to return to normal after the disaster has struck. To minimize disaster losses, it is very important to have a good disaster recovery plan for every business subsystem and operation within an enterprise in any industry.

1. Write a report on hurricane preparedness, as practiced in the offshore oil drilling industry.

2. To understand the benefits of preparedness from an engineering perspective.

Your paper should be 3-5 pages in length including graphics, and conform to the APA Requirements. Include in-text citations, with at least five credible references.

The U.S offshore energy production is a critical part of the country’s energy production
that has a direct impact on the economic state of the nation (Heidrick, 2013). The offshore
supplies make up 25 and 30 percent of the nation’s oil and gas production respectively (NOIA,
2013). A major impediment to the production has been the hurricanes and tropical storms that
have in recent years increased in number as well as intensity. The Gulf of Mexico is an important
region to the supply of oil and gas to the country. The area has roughly 3800 platforms, 113 of
those were affected by Hurricanes Rita and Katrina back in 2005 (NOIA, 2013). 2,127 of the
platforms were exposed to the hurricane conditions of wind speeds of over 74 miles an hour
(API, 2017). Hurricane Gustav and Ike destroyed around 60 platforms (API, 2017). The damage
caused led to the loss of over 13,000 barrels of oil and approximately 96 million cubic feet of
natural gas. The industry has since put in various measures to lower such impact when they do
happen (API, 2017).
