Designing Simple Radial Flow Device for Determining Thermal Conductivity

Introduction
Normally, in human bodies, cells and tissues have different rates of temperature and heat
energy. Thermal conductivity is defined as the transfer of heat energy between human cells and
tissues. In an example, using two surfaces within a human body with a temperature difference
between them, heat energy will have to shift between the two body organs or tissues. Shifting in
thermal energy is mostly from high concentrated areas to low concentrated areas. Alternatively,
thermal conductivity may be defined as the total heat energy transferred per unit time and unit
surface area, divided by the temperature difference between the two tissues (Yaws, 1995).
For our project purposes, we will be designing a device which will be used in determining
thermal conductivity in chicken leg bone. In all experiment works, thermal conductivity is
expressed in watts per degree Kelvin. In my case, I will be designing Simple Radial Flow Device
(SRFD)be used in measuring and analyzing thermal conductivity in the chicken leg bone (Yaws,
1995).
Design and performance of SRF device, will be based on a number of assumptions:
The first assumption will be:
1.
The ambient testing-temperature will have an insignificant influence on system-
calibration constant. It is important to understand that, the validity of this assumption remains to
be assessed.
2.
Moreover, the chicken leg bone was assumed to possess a uniform square shape.
3.
The distilled water used in the design and testing was at room temperature.
4.
The apparatus was assumed to perform different when at temperatures of 0 °C, 5 °C,
10 °C, 20 °C and 40 °C.
5.
Environmental impacts on the device performance were assumed to be negligible.
If adhered to, these assumptions will aid in coming up simple but realistic experimental reading.
The accurate determination of the thermal-conductivity of biological tissues will be
achieved through use of our simple Radial Flow Device. It is a form of transient system which will
have a great impact in terms of simultaneously measuring both the transverse and longitudinal
thermal conductivities of chicken bone tissues. After obtaining the results, it will be necessary to
perform both the physical and mathematical models as well as t...
