Information security has been a significant concern for major companies in the 21st
century. Big companies have been victims of information security breach, for instance, Yahoo,
Apple, Uber, and Deloitte among others. Information security breach refers to access to
unauthorized data, network or services by bypassing the underlain security measures to protect
them. In this article, we are going to focus on a popular email provider and search engine
company, Yahoo, which has had massive data breaches in the past few years, that is, in 2013 and
2014.
Back in 2013, Yahoo announced that over 3 billion accounts were hacked and
confidential user information exposed. Names, birthdays, security questions and phone numbers
were all exposed. However, Yahoo stated that the hackers did not obtain bank and credit
information that had been attached to the yahoo accounts. It is believed that the hackers stole
yahoo’s source code and used it to forge cookies that could allow them to login into users’
accounts without requiring them to enter the details; email address and password. While it was
investigating this “forged cookie” claim, one billion more accounts were hacked in late 2014.
Yahoo believes that it was a state-sponsored act. Federal officials announced charges
that alleged there was a conspiracy between the Russia national security agency and some
