Objectives: To understand the principle, the function and layout of Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) in aircraft applications. To Extend the IMA concept to the Fuel management system on the Learjet 45 aircraft. To identify and describe the Fuel management system operation and control. To explain and understand the Fuel management system at component level in the Learjet 45 aircraft. The assignment requires the students to review all aspects of safety in aircraft maintenance and establish safety hazards identification related to the Fuel management and reporting procedures. Task: Write a 2000 word technical report on the following: Detailed description of a given aircraft integrated avionics system- Lear jet 45 Fuel Management System Note: You can include diagram(s) and flow charts to support your method, but you must not rely on the diagram for a full explanation. Background: Fuel management functions in today’s aircraft rely substantially on state of the art avionics. The enormous growth of digital electronics technology has significantly influenced the avionics approach to fuel management system. As such over the last 25 years or so, there has been a progressive move to adoption of integrated avionics in to the aircraft systems, including the fuel system, etc….. The fuel system is one of the most important systems in an aircraft and its purpose to stores, manages and supplies the fuel to the aircraft engine. The aircraft fuel system supplies a proper amount of clean fuel at all operating conditions to the engine. MTCA5030 Page 2 of 7 Fuel system must be so designed such that it supplies a proper amount of fuel to the engine at various phases of flight such as changes in altitude, rapid maneuvering, sudden acceleration or deceleration. The fuel system means a complete package of equipment which help from storage of fuel up to the delivery to the tank in a proper way i.e. fuel tanks, fuel pipe lines, valves, fuel indicators, fuel pressure pumps, warning signals etc. From the birth of the aircraft systems till now, there is much advancement made in the fuel systems. The fuel system design, construction and components selection vary from aircraft to aircraft and also depend on the number of engines employed. A light weight single engine aircraft will have simple or box type fuel system whereas a heavy aircraft with twin engine will have a complex fuel system such as integral type of fuel tanks. You are required to: Provide an overview of the Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) concept in aircraft applications with a suitable block diagram. Discuss the basic operation of Fuel Management systems in relation to the IMA concept. Explain the layout, construction and operation of the Fuel Management system in the Lear jet 45 aircraft with a suitable block diagram. Equipment: MTC Library, Internet, Course Materials, workshop 17, Lear jet 45 Maintenance Manual, wiring diagram manual and fault isolation manual. Procedure: Your department lecturer will identify the main areas with respect to IMA and Fuel Management system. You are required to investigate the areas identified and assess the possible safety issues leading acts and actions to be in place for the prevention. You are to refer Learjet 45 technical publications, Aircraft Technical books in the MTC Library, and online resources. You will write a technical report (2000 words), Tolerance (+/- 10%) on this subject taking into consideration of the following key features: Overview of the Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) concept in aircraft applications with a suitable block diagram. Discuss the basic operation of Fuel Management system with relation to the IMA concept with simple block diagram and the advantages of the IMA Fuel Management system. Explain the layout, construction and operation of Fuel Management system in the Lear jet 45 aircraft with a suitable block diagram. MTCA5030 Page 3 of 7 Write the procedure of operational test of Fuel Management system and general Safety Practices that need to be observed during maintenance. Research three abnormal scenarios related to Fuel Management system, their warning/caution indication in the cockpit along with the remedial action. Note: You can include diagram(s) and flow charts to support your method, but you must not rely on the diagram for a full explanation. Learning outcomes: On successful completion of this assignment, students will be expected, at threshold level, to be able to: Describe the aircraft IMA concept, basic operations and its advantages in modern day aviation. Describe the Fuel management System layout on the Learjet 45. Understand the warning and indications related to Fuel management System operation. Troubleshooting and rectifying the faults related to Fuel Management System. Understand and carry out the functional check of the Fuel management System on Learjet 45. Reading / References: The Module teaching notes issued to students by the course team at the start of the Module. Other References: 1. Learjet 45 Maintenance manual. 2. Learjet 45 wiring diagram manual. 3. Learjet 45 fault isolation manual. 4. Technical books in the MTC library. 5. Online resources. Notes: The assignment is worth 40% of the total module mark. Further guidance will be given during taught sessions. Feedback will be provided via Turnitin for the awarded marks and individual Feedback/marks sheet. Deferred/ Second attempt assessment will be as per the module descriptor.
