History of Correctional Facilities and Alternatives to Incarceration
The History of Correctional Facilities and Alternatives to Incarceration
Correctional facilities at their roots were created to do exactly what their name implies: Correct
delinquent members of society and reintegrate them into society. Correctional facilities also have
the duty to imprison criminals upon conviction of a crime or suspected criminal members of
society that have not yet been convicted. Correctional facilities are used as a punishment for
citizens that have proven that they cannot follow the laws established by the land. They are
punished by confinement from society and reduced freedoms compared to the general
population. The goal of such facilities is to reduce the amount of criminals that reoffend, but
American correctional facilities have not been very successful in this aspect. The American
corrections system has the highest rate of incarceration in the world. This speaks to the
effectiveness of the system and shows that the current correctional facilities are inadequate. Have
correctional facilities been faithful to their original mission? In short, no. Correctional facilitates
have never truly and completely fulfilled their original mission and in the United States, have
proven that American correctional facilities are inadequate and cause more harm than good to the
prisoners and society as a whole.

Greeks were the first to postulate the idea of using prison as a system of rehabilitation to change
the nature of prisoners and not just simply punish them. The origin of the prison system was not
for those that committed crimes, but those that could not pay their debts. The incarceration
periods were often indefinite since impoverished citizens could not afford to pay their debts and
they could not work while they were incarcerated. So thus prison term limits were set, and the
foundation for the current prison system used in America was created. The ancient Romans
created the idea of using prison as a form of punishment for other crimes and not just debts. The
Romans used prisoner labor to create public works and other projects or as slaves. The prisoners
in these early systems had no concept of human right...
