Suicide Prevention
The article, “Preventing Suicide” is a 2006 WHO organization publication under the
Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse. The article contains selected sections of the
famed SUPRE initiative launched by the organization back in 1999 to address the growing
concern of suicide as a public health problem. The article is a social workers’ blueprint in
approaching and dealing with patients experiencing suicidal ideations. Suicide is among the
global health risk issues that mostly affect the Western countries. Suicide accounts for about
1.5% of deaths around the globe. The US alone has been recording well above an average of
30,000 suicide-related deaths since 2003. This is a huge loss for the economy and productivity of
the country.
Social workers have been subjected to the grueling task of addressing the ever-increasing
number of suicide patients-who are far less treated with much attention, compared to other
highly publicized health problems like homicide. The high level of self-inflicted health problems
has called on the governments to further upgrade existing suicide prevention intervention.
However, this move is been hampered by the vein of scientific research on suicide prevention.
Hence, the assistance of social professionals in counseling and related fields is very much
needed.
