REACTION PAPER MODULE 1
In Chapter 2 of Dyson's "Fear mongering, an examiner's handbook" (2012), it expounds
on the idea of psychological oppression. Concentrating his endeavors on the key parts of
psychological warfare and its establishment, Dyson analyzes fear mongering a tiny bit at a time.
He dates us back similarly as the 1960's and makes an establishment for fear based oppression.
By developing its definition, Dyson clarifies and separates between the different sorts of fear
based oppression to build up a healthier comprehension of psychological warfare alone. At last,
Dyson unravels what can and what can't be considered fear mongering through considerations
and a progression of inquiries to outfit one's comprehension of the general thought of
psychological warfare.

Reaction Paper: Terrorism Module 1
Terrorism is one of the main focus points regarding chapter 2 of Dyson’s “Terrorism, An
Investigator’s Handbook.” Not only does this chapter reflect on all concepts of terrorism, but it is
also more focused on how the term ‘terrorism’ is defined (Dyson, W.E., 2012). Through the
dissection of terrorism and how this chapter relates to the subversions while describing the
various branches existing and explaining the functions of terrorism and how terrorism operates,
there are notations of how this affects the society at large from prior and present experiences.
Essentially, this terrorism chapter is as a whole, explaining the issues revolving around the
multiple types of terrorism.
As per the book, Terrorism is a term that is utilized to strike fear into people. Although
this term has been altered over and over again the past centuries, the main concept of the term
has remained the same (Dyson, W.E., 2012). This part of Dyson's work instantly opens up with
the numerous different meanings of psychological warfare, all the more so on how it has
developed from the start as of not long ago. Catchphrases, for example, "fear," "viciousness,"
and "terrorizing" are as yet a solid base and establishment of the key thought of psychological
warfare. In this way, its definition has not been altered radically. What has changed, pretty much,
is the different activities that the meaning of "psychological warfare" applies to. What was
viewed as a "fear monger" act has extended and advanced throughout the years to a considerably
bigger database of activities (White, J.R., 2014).
Some of the key questions that Dyson focuses on discerning what creates a terrorist and
how they come to portraying these types of behaviors towards others and other nations. One of
the questions he asks is, “Does a terrorist have to attempt to kill people?” or “Does a terrorist

have to employ physical violence?” (Dyson, 2012 p. 22-23). With everything taken into account,
the key idea to remember is more so the meaning of psychological oppression instead of the
ideas or acts it applies as well. Different political and social gatherings have all embraced their
adaptation or ideas of the meaning of fear mongering which is presently why there are different
branches of psychological warfare that Dyson later locations (Dyson, W.E., 2012).
Dyson now focuses on the various branches that make up terrorism and how each branch
can be extracted from the same term and understanding. Although the multiple forms of
terrorism are broken down from the original form, each maintains the same concept as the
original, “All terrorist attacks fall within the following two broad categories regardless of the
political cause involved or the composition of the group perpetrating the act….” (Dyson, 2012,
p.22). Perusing further on, Dyson separates the base or establishment of psychological
oppression considerably more into different structures or composes. For example, there is “LeftWing Extremism,” “Right-Wing Extremism,” “Single Issue or Special Interest Terrorism,”
Religious Terrorism,” “National or Ethnic Terrorism,” “Race Base or Hate Terrorism,”
“Computer or Cyberterrorism,” and finally “Narcoterrorism.” (Dyson, W.E., 2012).
These various forms and genres, if one may say, of terrorism are solely the forms that
Dyson decided to focus on and expand on. Keep in mind that everyone has their interpretation of
terrorism and its different versions, so the list probably does not even end. From here, Dyson
focuses on each various genre of terrorism and expands on them with his understanding and the
exact definition of the term itself. All in all, the key aspect of this chapter to keep in mind is the
key idea of terrorism. Its foundation, violence, fear, terror, and even political or social agenda,

really does not change for the most part. Even when Dyson branches off into the various genres
of terrorism, its core idea is kept intact.
