3. To what extent does “The Garden Party” counter the historical views of women of the
time?
This is one of the Katherine Mansfield famous stories which have clearly demonstrated
the two distinct classes of people in the society. There are several female characters that have
been intelligently used by the writer in an attempt to convey the main message. There are two
sets of female characters from two different backgrounds; those from Mr. Scott’s family and
those from Sheridan’s family (Duffy, p. 15). Laura who happens to be the main character and at
the same time she is a child from the Sheridan’s family, is the one who have decided to perform
an important role in bringing the connection between the rich and the poor in that society.
The women are highly mistreated by the men according to this story. The upper class male
members are depicted as the oppressors of women in the society....
