Question One
SMC (South town Medical Center) electronic billing system happen to have numerous
flaws, such as compromised payment codes (four to five digit International Classification Code
and five digit Current Procedural Terminology code) used for effecting medical bills by
insurance companies. The case study conducted by Karen Coder is a clear indicator that indeed
the system at South town Medical Center is not in control. The number of incorrect electronic
transactions supersedes correct procedures being executed. Generally, there should be fewer
errors made by an effective electronic billing system unlike current scenario at South town
Medical Center.
There are a number of factors contributing to the defective system at South town Medical
Center. The meeting between Dave and nurses is an opener that indeed billing clerks at South
town Medical Center lack necessary skills on how to generate electronic payment codes
submitted to medical insurance companies to clear medical bills. Nurses get oral instructions
once a year thus fails to grasp new concepts on how to conduct electronic billing procedures.
Employee motivation and sensitization practices of handling electronic billing procedures is
absent at South town Medical Center. The medical facility has not bothered to hire coding
specialists to train receptionists and nurses on how to generate genuine ICD and CPT codes.
