Barista coffee shop is a small business located in Portland. Barista serves espresso and
pour-over drinks with beans. The firm has to improve the products offered to its customers and
expand to other regions. Training and development are essential to growing the business. The
business has a manager who is the owner and three servers. The manager has raised concerns over
decreasing number of customers in the past few months. In this paper, I will act as a consultant for
Barista coffee on training to improve their performance. It addresses the main components of
training and development and the challenges the manager might face when addressing
organizational performance. Further, I will present a training strategy to improve the business’
competitiveness.
Key elements of training and development
Training of employees involves four main areas; knowledge, social, technical skills and
techniques. Training is the process of putting specific skills in a person. Development is the
opportunities available to assist employees to grow. Training and development aimed at improving
present or future employee performance by enhancing their ability to work through learning,
change in attitude, skills, and knowledge (Noe, 2010). Barista coffee shop has to improve the
quality of coffee and services given to their customers.
Barista coffee shop can use two training methods, off-the-job or on-job. The off-job
techniques include conferences, lectures, and simulations. On-job techniques are behavior
modeling, role-play, coaching, internships, job instructions and orientations applicable at a
person’s place of work (Noe, 2010). The on-job is most appropriate in Barista’s situation since it’s
a small business with few employees. The training can be done after finishing the day’s work or

on weekends. A significant element of the on-job technique is education. The inclusion of online
training is also useful in passing knowledge.
According to Noe (2010), it is important to get an effective program manager for Barista
Coffee shop which in this situation am the consultant to manage the training. The focus of a
training manager is to develop employee’s skills and knowledge to build their potential. The
training program for Barista will be done within the employees for them to discover available
