Introduction
There has been considerable evidence of China's success in Africa to the chagrin of the
western nations that colonized Africa. China's success in Africa is not well understood. There
have been claims of Chinese firms operating unethically to secure infrastructural contracts at the
expense of western companies. An in-depth analysis of China-Africa relations points from a
different perspective. China-Africa relationship also referred Sino-Africa explained from four
approaches namely political, economic, securities and lastly ideological. China success is
described under the four views. China has ‘One China Policy' that it has succeeded in preventing
many African Nations from recognizing Taiwan and Tibet as separate from China. Countries that
had diplomatic relations with Taiwan closed down the embassies in preference to ties with
China. Examining the historical Sino–Africa relations between 1949- 1979 China pursued a
political agenda. China was keener on its political agenda of gaining international support from
Africa. From 1979-1990's China changed strategy in line with its economic interests towards
economic development both abroad and locally. China negotiates government to government
contracts that favor Chinese companies to execute the agreements. The Chinese government also
provides financing that is natural resources as collateral to the credit. Africa is not China's largest
trading partner economically. In comparison, China's interests in Asia (60.9%), Latin America
(16%) and Europe (11%). China extends different types of credit to African countries ranging
from zero interest loans, concessionary loans, and special purchase credit. China and some
autocratic regimes appear to have economically grown supported by free market economy
forces. China, in brief, is in need of raw materials for its industries and African countries are in
lack of infrastructure that comes with financing.

Chino-Africa
There are significant historical relations between China and Africa. Archeologists have
excavated shipwrecks; there are African descendants with Chinese features found in coastal
communities like Kenya. There is historical evidence of voyages to the Indian Ocean from
China as early as 1400-1405 according to Wang UNESCO (1974). The Arabs and Indians
dominated the Indian Ocean trade. Their interaction with the Chinese may have interested the
Chinese to undertake the voyages (Ferrard, 1913, 1919). A village in Kenya coast has evidence
of even earlier expedition. Porcelain and Chinese folklore are some of the historical proof of a
possible journey around 600 years ago. The facial features and DNA analysis have confirmed
relations between the Kenya family to Chinese origins according to China daily (2005). Chinese
had advanced maritime technology at the time superior to the Indian ships and Arab dhows
(UNESCO, 1974).

There are reports of sailors bringing a giraffe to China from Africa

(Duyverdak, 1949). China’s economy is currently the second largest economy in the world with
an average gross domestic (GDP) annual growth of 10%. More so, China has become the top
foreign exchange reserve in the world having accumulated over $ 3.3 trillion in reserve. Also, its
economy has even climbed to the top of international direct investments and fifth to outward
foreign direct investments. Although China’s economy has been ranked second to that of the
United States of America, China has increasingly surpassed USA’s contribution to the world
economic growth.

Initially China’s economy was very reserved, and in turn, it was ineffective, isolated, stagnant
and very poor. All this changed when China embraced economic reforms and decided to liberate
their trade in 1979. Since then China’s economy has been on a fast track of growth to a global

giant. Scholars have predicted that China’s will surpass that of USA shortly. However, for this to
be possible the government of China has to implement domestic consumption boost incentives,
economic stimulus packages as well as revising the lending policies to be more lenient to
borrowers.

China as a country before 1978 was considered a developing nation like most countries in
the world (Maktar, 2016). It's leaning towar...
