Introduction
It’s a known fact that poor lifestyle choices are to blame for most of the preventable
diseases in the world. A lot of processed foods children consume are high in added sugar but
poor in nutrition. These foods put children at risk of being obese, developing cardiovascular
disease, diabetes, hypertension among other lifestyle diseases. This study examined existing
literature in an attempt to determine the effect of these added sugars on children with the hopes
of trying to come up with the acceptable amounts which they can prescribe to children. Children
consume high amounts of processed sugar in their food and drinks, and this makes up about 16%
of their daily calorie intake (Vos, Kaar, Welsh, Van Horn, Feig, Anderson & Johnson, 2017). It
has never been actually determined whether these sugars are actually safe for children. It is
thereby pertinent to establish whether these sugars are harmful to children as it may be harming
them without their knowledge or that of their parents
Methods
The research group carried out a literature review using keywords such as sugar, added
sugars, fructose, sweeteners, insulin resistance, cardiovascular disease risk, non-alcoholic fatty
liver disease. The study focused on human studies conducted by the year 2015 and used Pubmed
to carry out their literature review. They determined the relevant articles and wrote summaries of
these articles which were then used for discussion by the experts to come up with
