Description

Respond to a peer providing them with at least two developmental and/or educational interventions (e.g.- school-based social cognitive treatments) that are available to families with children with severe conduct issues or anti-social behaviors, as well as why these interventions would be effective. Lastly, provide a rationale that explains why early intervention is so important. 150 words or more.

To promote growth in self-control in my classroom I would try some strategies that would allow the children to think. Being a teacher I have to be aware of how the children work by themselves and with others. I will mostly be working with 1-5 year olds. I would have the children respond respectfully when they are called on, have them come when they are called, and set up a routine for the day that will allow each child to develop responsibility and self-discipline. I feel that these strategies will be effective because children learn from their mistakes and repetition. By allowing the children to focus on things they are responsible for, they will be able to focus on their selves and how to mature with self-control.

To address the increase in reactive aggression with the 1-5 year olds I would address the situation as they appear. I want the children in my classroom to understand that aggression is a form of expression but it will not be tolerated in the classroom. I do not want the children to think it’s acceptable to injure other children or act out in a negative way in my classroom. I will also use strategies like dismissing the situation by guiding them towards something different as sort of a distraction, and utilize rules/guidelines that the children will be expected to follow.

The strategies I would use to address verbal aggression in my classroom of 1-5 year olds would be to figure out the source of where the verbal aggression is coming from. I would talk to the parents of the child and to the other children to see if the child had picked it up from somewhere and could be mimicking what they see. I also want to speak with the child and let them know that verbal aggression is not allowed in the classroom. Verbal aggression could be in forms of harming others through threats of physical aggression such as name-calling, or hostile teasing (Berk, 2013, pg. 517).

I want all of the children in my classroom to get along, but sometimes that doesn’t happen. I can help children decrease aggressive behavior amongst their peers by having them work on team building exercises and work more with one another. If I see a child left out, or made fun of, I will take action and put a stop to it. I don’t want the children in my class to be disrespectful to one another in any way. They need to learn early on that they need to depend on one another and work with one another in order to get things done. Some activities in the classroom will require the students to work together. By making them interact with each other on a daily basis, I’m hoping will decrease the aggressive behavior.

In the chart it mentions that children ages 6-11 are reactive or hostile and that their aggression (largely verbal and relational) continues to increase (Berk, 2013, pg. 517). If we are able to help children with their self-control at a young age we will be able to eliminate any potential bad habits they may develop over time. Children pick up things very quick and learn from personal experience. If they are taught that what they are doing is wrong it can eventually help them as they get older when they experience the same situations. To help the children develop morally relevant self-control it would be more efficient to start while they are young in order for them to learn from their mistakes and take what they have learned as they get older.
