SCREENING AND TREATING POTENTIAL CLIENTS FOR ADDICTIONS

Abstract
Treating clients for addiction requires a significant focus on the underlying risk factors,
which provide a greater understanding of how an individual developed an addiction. The process
under which these factors can be effectively developed is through the effective screening process,
which is done after having a well-engaged assessment where it is possible to have an understanding
on an individual situation and the level of addiction. Development of a treatment intervention to
counter addiction can only be developed after a review of the screened results where specific
elements can be developed under which they provide a greater understanding of the best way
forward. The agency needs to develop a crucial process under which all these processes can be
effectively conducted and ensure that clients are treated with the most appropriate intervention that
targets their specific issues. Therefore, this paper will provide a greater focus on screening and
treat potential clients with an addiction problem. This focus will consider crucial screening tools
and appropriate intervention techniques that can be put into consideration in ensuring that patients
suffering from addiction are well taken care of.

Introduction
Addiction is a serious mental disorder, which prevents patients from having an
understanding of the key development processes where they can boost their lives and understand
what is beneficial to their wellbeing and what is not. It is very difficult for addicts to develop an
understanding of what they need in life and thus proper focus on individual objectives allows for
the development of better measures under which such individuals can be engaged. There exist
different levels of addiction, and thus as an agency, it is important to put in place a well developed
interactive assessment process under which it is possible to understand and individual-specific
traits and how they influence their behavior and psychological well-being. Addiction involves both
a physical addiction and mental addiction. Unless there is a greater understanding on the type of
addiction that a client is dealing with, it is very difficult to develop an intervention that can be able
to provide a greater focus addiction being considered (Tenegra & Leebold, 2016).
Physical addiction occurs due to continued use of certain type of drugs and can as well
occur in cases where the substances that are being abused are harmless. It has effects on use and
withdrawal although their effect is not severe and can be easily countered as long as the assessment
and screening process is effectively conducted under which the underlying causative factors are
identified and form the basis under which an appropriate intervention can be considered. Mental
addiction occurs when an individual develops a mental desire or craving for a certain type of
substance due to chemical changes that have taken place under which the normal functioning of
the body changes to incorporate the changes that have been included due to ingestion of chemicals
(Jimerson & Musick, 2013). The use of a given substance, therefore, becomes a part of an
individual and the body reacts negatively when there is no intake of the substance. This is the most
