There are many combinations of this type of client; one example would be a client with alcoholism and a depressive disorder.

  • Pick 1 combination, and discuss how this particular client’s needs will be met by the treatment you will provide him or her.
  • Given permission by the client, how will you discuss this with the client and his or her family or significant others?

DUAL DIAGNOSIS

Abstract

Current national statistics on substance abuse in the country indicate that individuals with mental
illnesses have increased chances of alcohol and drug abuse. The National Survey on Drug Use
and Health conducted in 2011 indicates that above 25% of Americans suffering from any given
mental illness had used illegal drugs in the previous 12 months. While this is the case, compared
to other Americans without mental illnesses, only 12% of this other populations had abused
illegal drugs (Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, 2005). These statistics reveal that the rate
of drug abuse is more prevalent among people with mental illnesses when compared to the other
population. Hence, according to the national statistics, people with mental illnesses have
increased chances of drug abuse compared to the latter (Minkoff, 2001). Dual diagnosis
treatments recognize this profound relationship between drug abuse and mental illnesses and
further acknowledge that in a case where the two coexist, treatment provided must deal with the
two conditions in order to for the treatment to be effective. The current best practices
recommended to dealing with dual diagnosis mirror these principles.
