Trash  bin  fertilizer   -­‐Business  engineering-­‐       Names:  Fatma  Al  Zadjali  13-­‐0224   Al  Thuraiya  Albusaidi  13-­‐0289   Nujoom  Al  Amri  13-­‐0236   Alhawra  Al  Ajmi  13-­‐0240   Riham  Al  kitani  13-­‐0186                                   1   Table  of  content     1.Introduction………………………………………………………………………….……………………3   2.Operation  process………………………………………………………………….…………………….3   3.Advantages…………………………...………………………………………………..……………………4   4.Disadvantages……………………………………………………………………………………………..5   5.progress  and  plan……………………………………………………………………………..………….5   6.Conclusion…...………………………………………………………………………………….…………..6   7.References………………………….…………………………………………………..…………………...6                                                                       2     Introduction     The   trash   bin   fertilizer   is   a   new   innovative   idea   that   converts   the   food   scraps   into   fertilizers,   which   can   be   used   in   many   sectors   such   as   households,   commercial   and   industrial   sectors,   it   can   process   good   amount   of   food   waste,   which  can  be  useful  at  the  end  of  the  day  instead  dumping  it  in  the  landfills.   The  trash  bin  fertilizer  is  an  automated  process  that  can  process  all  types  of   food  waste  (vegetable  waste,  apple  cores,  orange  peels,  carrot  tops,  cucumber   endings,  meats  -­‐except  bones-­‐,  etc.)  Within  24  hours.  Traditional  composting   can   take   up   to   months   and   it   has   much   more   negative   impacts,   trash   bin   fertilizer  speeds  up  the  process,  which  can  tell  two  benefits  of  it,  fast  and  easy   with   less   negative   impacts.   The   main   objective   is   to   reduce   the   amount   of   food   waste   that   is   transferred   to   the   landfills   every   day   even   with   a   small   percentage  although  it  does  not  transform  the  waste  into  fertilizer  directly.         Operation  process     The  bin  is  large  and  it  has  a  capacity  of  7  days,  it  has  a  remote  monitoring  and   also   an   application   to   turn   on   the   device.   By   switching   on   either   from   the   device   or  phone  application  this  device  turns  food  scraps  into  fertilizer  within  24  hours   automatically,   which   is   faster   than   the   traditional   composting   that   takes   over   months.     Once  you  turn  on  the  device  and  it  starts  the  recycling  process  to  convert  food   into  fertilizer  you  can  stop  the  device  if  you  want  to  add  more  food  waste  but  it   should  be  within  the  first  30  minutes  you’ve  paused  to  add  food  scraps.  After  the   first   30   minutes   you   can’t   add   more   food   because   the   device   needs   sufficient   time  to  precede  its  action.    It  accepts  all  kind  of  food  including  meat.  The  bin  consists  of  an  activated  carbon   filter,   which   prevents   bad   smell   and   reduces   amount   of   carbon.   It   uses   plant-­‐ based   additive   (combination   of   coconut   husk   and   baking   soda)   which   helps   in   breaking  down  the  food  with  moisture,  heat  and  agitation  resulting  to  fertilizer   for   your   backyard   garden.   The   plant-­‐based   additive   packets   come   with   the   fertilizer’s  bin.     Difference  between  Composting  and  fertilizer  recycler  bin:     Traditional  composting   Fertilizer  recycler  bin   Takes  over  months  to  turn  food   Process  of  recycling  takes  over   waste  into  fertilizer   24hours  to  get  fertilizer     3   Cant  compost  meat   Requires  large  space  backyard   Attracts  bugs  and  wildlife   Able  to  compost  meat  and  dairy   All  the  process  happens  inside  the   bin   Works  perfectly  in  your  kitchen   away  from  bugs  and  wildlife             Advantages       The food recycling process converts food waste into fertilizer through a fully automatic process, accepts a couple of food types such as diary and meat and can be preformed inside your home and the result is ready to use fertilizer within 24 hours unlike traditional composting, food recycler automatically controls moisture, heat, air and the processes not exposed to unwanted pests or wild life. Traditional composting takes months to process, requires a large outdoors space, manual maintenance and can attract pests and wildlife. Another advantage is that it creates a homemade fertilizer, even better than recycling food waste is beautifying your own landscaping and plants the same time it can be spread on top of the soil of your lawn, garden or outdoor potted plants releasing nutrient’s into the soil. Moreover, it enables household to release the rewards of doing their part to help reduce landfill waste. It’s a device that fits seamlessly into your home and lifestyle.       4   Disadvantages     There  are  several  disadvantages  of  the  fertilizer  bin  such  as  it  consumes  energy   which   is   approximately   300   kWh/year   assuming   a   cycle   is   run   once   a   week.   Moreover,   some   natural   fertilizers   such   as   seaweed,   fish   oil   and   manure   are   quiet   too   smelly   to   be   used   indoors.   Another   disadvantage   is   that   its   costly   because   it   requires   a   lot   of   effort,   time   and   special   material   to   design.   A   main   disadvantage   is   that   it   emits   gases   such   as   nitrous   oxide,   carbon   dioxide   and   ammonia.  The  device  has  a  filter,  which  is  made  of  activated  carbon  and  HEPA   layers   designated   to   continuously   filter   the   air.   The   fertilizer   works   as   well   to   reduce  NH3  by  having  an  open-­‐air  vent  completely  30minutes.     Progress     The capital budget is determined and the idea of the project needs to be approved. The implementation process should be done regardless to its complexity in construction. We need after that to start with the operation testing to ensure that there are no mistakes and through the optimization and modification process we fix the mistakes and make some improvement in the construction process. The other step is to introduce people to fertilizer recycle bin, and the features that it has by advertising and through social media to attract customers.   Plan     Our   first   step   in   the   plan   is   to   get   approval   from   the   government   to   start   our   project;   we   have   to   include   stakeholders   in   all   stages   of   the   planning   process.   Before   implementing   the   project   we   have   to   get   the   ability   to   educate   people   about  the  advantages  of  the  fertilizer  bin  so  they  know  more  about  the  project   and   have   the   knowledge   of   how   the   bin   works.   After   we   start   our   project   we   have   to   think   of   ways   that   we   can   advert   our   project   and   also   convincing   costumers  to  go  for  the  fertilizer  bin,  we  also  need  a  study  of  how  to  improve  the   business   in   the   resources   needed;   money,   workers   and   equipment.   Finally   when   our  project  is  improving  and  it  become  successful  in  our  country,  we  will  market   the  idea  of  our  project  nationally.                 5   Conclusion     In   conclusion,   as   an   environmental   engineers   our   project   is   a   new   idea   in   our   country   and   it   aims   to   save   the   environment   by   fertilizing   food   waste.   It   is   impossible   to   eliminate   human   impact   on   the   environment,   but   we   can   do   our   best  to  minimize  and  control  our  footprint.       References         -­‐ https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/zera-­‐food-­‐recycler-­‐recycling-­‐-­‐2#/   6
