In Chapter One, Tyler focused on the question “What educational purpose should the school seek to attain”. In my opinion, his sources are exhaustive because he clearly divided his ideas of the sources into two large parts: the origins of the educational purpose and the basis of selecting the educational purpose. The origins of the educations purpose contain the studies of learners, the contemporary life outside the school and the suggestion from subject specialists. Standing on the view of the learner themselves, the educational purpose would be fit with their physical, social and integrative needs. The school want the learners gain the basic knowledge and skills for them to get used to live in the society. Moreover, Tyler emphasizes that the educational purpose should collect what the learners interested in. The contemporary life outside the school is an important factor of educational purpose because of the need from their own society or community. The school wants learners to inherit the cultures and knowledge from the history. Then the learners will use what they learned and make their communities better. Furthermore, it not only collects the opinions from learner themselves, the status quo of the current society but also care the feelings of the teachers in the subject areas. The subject specialist is really important factor in educational purpose because they could bring the great suggestion in their particular areas that what knowledge would be suitable to teach in school for different levels of learners. Tyler also pointed out that the subject specialist should figure out what knowledge would be suitable for all learners and the value of this subject could bring to them in regular lives rather than focusing too deep in this subject area to influence the learner’s interests. When Tyler talked about the two basis of selecting the educational purpose: the use of the philosophy and psychology of learning. I think Tyler was exhaustive because when he mentioned about the democracy of the education that we need to emphasize the equality of the society and every person has rights to receive the education. It is important to respect the value of all learners to create equal opportunities for them to do something for their community. The educational purpose would be work for both individual and the society. In my opinion, the primary source of the educational objectives would be depended on the particular areas and groups of people. For example, different countries would be in different economic situations with distinct cultural backgrounds. Therefore, their contemporary life would be primary source of the educational objectives. The politics and cultures inherited from the history may want learners to remember their histories and cultures. For countries in poverty, they may want schools to provide knowledge and skills for them to improve their communities. Furthermore, in my opinion, the situation of the society would influence the opinion of the learners from their living standards, families and background.
