Importance of providing students with disabilities access to general education
curriculum

Access to general education curriculum is vital for students with disabilities as it provides
them with the support required to significantly gain from the instructional curriculum. The
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act passed in 2004 highlights the significance of students
with disabilities access to general education curriculum (Lowe & Reynolds, 2000). Access to
general education ensures that students with disabilities are able to obtain the maximum
academic success possible. Similar to students in general education, the academic success of
students with disability is equally essential and as a result teachers should be accountable for
these students success. When these students are included in the general education systems that
have accountability, teacher’s expectations for these students increases. Historically, students
with disability did not have much access to general education and were primarily taught an
alternative curriculum (Katz & Mirenda, 2002). This denied the students the ability to advance to
their full potentials. As a result, access to general education forms an integral part of students
with special needs education system as access to general education enables students with
disabilities to achieve their fullest potentials that owes to the increased expectations teachers put
in place for these students in the general education systems.

The general education curriculum contains essential skills as well as knowledge that
students with disabilities should learn. Access to general education enables students to learn
these skills that are vital in their graduation as well as their after-school job careers. In the
