The juvenile justice is new for the generations. The first minor court came into existence
in the U.S in the year 1899 Illinois. Between the 1880-1920 era, social circumstances in the United
States were characterized by vast waves of immigration as well as the rampant increase in
urbanization. As a result of this, a lot of impoverished children wandered in the streets with a high
number of them being involved criminal activities. Once, arrested, these children were put in the
same jail rooms with adults. It was soon realized by lawmakers and other significant authorities
that these children were learning adult delinquent behaviors and were exiting those institutions as
competent criminals.
As a result, juvenile court systems and correctional centers were developed. Each of these
institutions was based on English Bridewell institution. The latter emphasized on teaching trade
and life skills. Teaching was incorporated into the system because it was believed that criminality
occurred due to the social environment and by extension was a survival mechanism for the
children. Thus, it was thought that upon teaching the youth some specific skills, they then could
make significant contributions to the society after their release rather than re-indulging in
