Introduction and Alignment
The Chern’s case study, located in the Appendix of the textbook, is a realistic job preview of the
human resource recruitment and selection process, providing you with experiential learning in
areas of staffing, specifically in strategic staffing. Assignments are particular to each workshop,
meaning that while they will build upon prior work—for example, Workshop Two assignments
will use or build upon Workshop One assignments—each workshop assignment is graded as a
single unit; the case study is not graded as a cumulative assessment in this course. Accordingly,
in Workshop Six you will not be expected to compile all of the work completed for Chern’s;
however, it will be very important for you to organize and manage your work papers in this case
study so that you may refer back to already completed work as necessary in order to complete
current and future case study steps in succeeding workshops.
This course case study is formative, and as a result, you will likely gain practical knowledge,
skills, and abilities throughout the course in all six workshops that can be readily transferred to
the workplace.
For Workshop Four, you will complete the steps identified with Chapters 8, 9, and 10.
In this workshop your assignment submission will be divided into two parts, each graded
separately.
Part I: Dropbox submission of your assessment plan table to your instructor by the end of the
third day of the workshop.
Part II: Dropbox submission of your completed assignment by the end of the workshop.
After having made the Part I submission to your instructor, you will get a response back from
your instructor with the individual candidate scores by the end of the fifth day of the workshop.
Upon completion of this assignment, you should be able to:
1. Create a scoring key for interviews.
2. Develop an assessment and selection plan.

Background Information
The assessment plan describes which assessment methods will be used to assess each of the
characteristics upon which applicants will be evaluated, in what sequence the assessments will
take place, and what weight each assessment will receive in determining a candidate’s overall
score. The importance of each characteristic will be evaluated or trained for after a candidate is
hired. (Phillips & Gully, 2015, p. 271)
A company’s internal assessment goals largely mirror its external assessment goals. These
objectives include evaluating the fit of employees with other jobs, enhancing the firm’s strategic
capabilities, gathering information with which to make downsizing decisions, maximizing fit,
making accurate and ethical assessments, generating a high return on the firm’s investment in its
assessment system, generating positive stakeholder reactions, supporting the firm’s talent
philosophy and human resource strategy, reinforcing the organization’s employer image,
identifying development needs, and maintaining legal compliance. (Phillips & Gully, 2015, p.
300)
Instructions
1. Read Chapter 10, “Assessing Internal Candidates,” and review Chapters 8 and 9 in the
Strategic Staffing textbook.
2. Read the chapter-by-chapter case assignments for Chapters 8, 9, and 10 in the appendix
of the textbook. The notes provide context and more detailed instruction in support of the
steps listed below.
3. In this workshop, for the 4.4 Chern's Case Study: Part I Dropbox written assignment,
you will complete the following Chern’s case study steps (as taken from the case study
“Summary of Assignments” in the Appendix of the textbook):
a. Step 9.a. Develop an assessment and selection plan that does not exceed the
remaining $4,000 budget. Use as much of the $4,000 as possible, based on the
selected assessments.
i.
For this step, select 3-5 assessments from those listed in the case
study. Place the names of the assessments in the heading portion of the
table below. The table is available for download in Shared Documents:
Assessment Selection Table. Note: The assessments selected will be
given to all eight applicants because they are all applying for the same job
of sales associate, and it is important to compare “apples to apples.”
ii. Fill in the cost per assessment for each applicant. The total cost for each
assessment should equal the individual cost times the number of
applicants. The total cost for all assessments should be as close to the
budgeted amount of $4,000 without going over. See the example shown
in the last column displaying the cognitive ability test with a cost of $70
per candidate. Important: If the cognitive ability test shown in the last
column of the table below for illustration purposes is not one of your
selected assessments, be sure to remove it and the costing for it from
you’re the last column.
iii. Include the completed table in Appendix B of your paper. (The
assessment plan table is not part of the word count of the paper.)
b. Step 9.c. Submit your Assessment Selection Table using the 4.4 Chern's Case
Study: Part I Dropbox by the end of the third day of the workshop.
INSTRUCTIONAL NOTE: This concludes Part I of the Chern's Case Study. You will receive scores from your
instructor within 48 hours of your Part I submission. You are to proceed immediately to Part II (Dropbox
Assignment 4.5) to complete the Chern's Case Study for Workshop Four while awaiting the results for Part I
from your instructor.
