Description

For this assignment, select a specific substance use disorder or gambling to be your focus. The assignment focus is independent of the other two unit assignments that you will develop later in this course.

Research the history of this addiction and analyze how the history impacts theory and treatment for this addiction. This analysis of the historical context serves as an introduction to current issues to be addressed. Next, analyze the impact of this substance use (or gambling) on the individual, family, and community by reviewing relevant scholarly sources. Your analysis should address the following points:

  • How does the impact of this behavior on an individual contribute to establishing a pattern of use that may escalate to addiction (meeting the criteria for a moderate or a severe specifier in DSM-5)?
  • What social and cultural issues impact the legal and social consequences of this behavior? How might the consequences differ depending on the client's age, race or ethnicity, gender, or socioeconomic class? (Select at least two to synthesize in your response.)
  • How do these behaviors likely impact intimate and family relationships across the lifespan?

Follow these assignment requirements:

  • Written Communication: Written communication is thoughtful and free of errors that detract from the overall message.
  • APA formatting: Resources and citations are formatted according to APA (6th edition) style and formatting.
  • Number of resources: Minimum of six scholarly sources. Distinguished submissions will likely exceed this number.
  • Length of paper: 6–8 typed, double-spaced pages, plus title page and references.
  • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point
  • HEROIN ADDICTION is the topic - template attached

Running head: NAME OF DOCUMENT Name of Document Author First Name MI. Last Name Capella University 1 NAME OF DOCUMENT 2 Impact of (Name Addiction) Provide an introduction to your paper making it clear what addiction you have selected and provide your reader with an overview of key points that will be discussed. Impact of History upon Addiction Theory and Treatment Provide an overview of key historical events or trends that are important to framing how the addiction is viewed. This often involves changes in the legal status of the substance or behavior. Changes in the availability or delivery may also be important. Analyze how these events or trends impact the theory or treatment available to address the addiction. Consider the models of addiction introduced in the text in the analysis. For example, does the Moral Model influence current treatment trends? DSM-5 Criteria and Severity Include a narrative description explaining how the diagnosis of the selected substance use or gambling disorder is addressed in the DSM-5. It is not necessary to copy the entire list of criteria as that does not demonstrate critical thinking. Rather, focus on how the criteria may be manifested in the typical user. The analysis needed will seek the support of at least one other scholarly source to demonstrate how the pattern of use may escalate from moderate to severe noting key features relevant to that addiction. For example, do users shift to different routes of administration or methods of accessing their substance (or gambling)? Social and Cultural Issues This section should address a minimum of two demographic factors (age, race or ethnicity, gender, or socioeconomic status) and analyze how those factors impact issues related NAME OF DOCUMENT 3 to the addiction with clear support from scholarly literature. The issues may be related to prevalence or access to treatment. Some addictions have very different meaning or context depending upon culture. Note that meeting Distinguished criteria warrants covering at least 3 factors. Consider using the search tool Summon in the Capella library entering the addiction paired with a demographic factor (e.g. Opiate addiction elderly) focusing on current articles. Legal and Social Consequences This section is related to the preceding one and could be combined as long as the minimum numbers of demographic factors are addressed as the legal or social consequences are explored. How do demographic factors (like race, gender, or socioecomic status) impact the way society imposes consequences upon the addict both legally and socially? Impact upon the Family and Intimate Relationships Review scholarly literature to describe how the addiction impacts those closest to the addict. Avoid sweeping generalizations that could apply to any addiction. An accurate description requires support from current scholarly literature in order to be specific and relevant. Conclusion A short conclusion can tie together the key points covered and draw conclusions about the impact of the selected addiction. Note that a minimum of 6 scholarly sources is required to support the analysis needed for Proficiency. Distinguished analysis will likely require more than six sources. While the text or NAME OF DOCUMENT 4 references such as the DSM-5 are appropriate to cite and include, the analysis will still require 6 more peer-reviewed articles in addition. General websites or web-based documents may hold a specific detail or statistic appropriate to cite, but are not considered scholarly. NAME OF DOCUMENT 5 References Author, A. A., Author, B. Impact of Heroin Addiction
Introduction

Heroine is one of the abused drugs in the US. Most people use it as a recreational drug
injected into a vein. The drug can however be smoked or snorted. Heroin is famed for its
euphoric effects that occurs immediately and lasts for a few hours. It is a trendy drug choice
in the US reputed for being highly addictive. The opiate narcotic is not legal in the US but is
used in other countries for pharmaceutical purposes. Countries like the UK prescribe heroine
to relieve extreme pain. Its various names are Diacetylmorphine, Morphine diacetate and
Diamorphine.
Impact of History upon Addiction Theory and Treatment
Heroine is an opiate meaning that it is a derivative of opium. Heroine’s history dates
back to the 1800s where the drug was used to mitigate the effects of alcoholism. Alcoholism
during this era was a major source of violence and death. In a bid to seek a solution to this
menace, opium was adopted as the solution to the problem. Chinese immigrants working on
the railroads are responsible for bringing opium to the US. Opium is a derivative of dried
latex in the unripe seedpods of opium poppies. Morphine, an opium derivative was later
created to relieve the effects of severe pain. The drug was fully adopted after it was found to
be capable of eliminating severe pain during surgeries or in traumatic injuries. Morphine
named after the Greek god of dreams due to the euphoric state it left the user in. The drug
was a useful drug in the medical profession as it was used to treat severe pain. It was way
later that scientists discovered the addictive properties of morphine.
Questions abound as to how heroine started. Heroine started when Charles Romley
Alder Wright, an English researcher sought to combine the two elements of morphine and
acetic anhydride. His synthesis produced adverse effects that included nausea, increased

anxiety and drowsiness. He abandoned his quest but was continued two decades later by
Henrich Dreser, a German scientist. At the time, he was working for a pharmaceutical
company known as Bayer. Together with his colleagues, they came up with the inference tha...
