Week 7 Reactions to Juvenile Cases

In this assignment, you will select and discuss two juvenile cases, the crimes committed, and the various criminal justice theories that may help explain the crime (hint- you will have to draw on knowledge gained from your CJ102 course, Intro to Criminology). Have the juvenile courts and juvenile corrections been adequate in the prosecution and punishment of minor persons accused and/or convicted of these crimes? Do you feel that legislation needs to be changed to influence either the punishment or rehabilitation of suspects accused of these crimes? Do you feel the victims or their families would support the legislation changes you are proposing? Why or why not? Do you feel that this legislature targets one group more than others (i.e. gang populations, lower socio-economic status populations, etc.)? Be sure to apply fundamental concepts of the administration of the justice process in your reflection. Your paper must be formatted in the following manner:

The paper must be approximately 1000 words in length (roughly 3-4 pages). Only the body of the paper counts towards the length. No information that belongs on a title page or reference page will count towards the length requirement.

Please follow APA guidelines; provide a title and reference page, use Times New Roman 12 point font, and double-space your lines. You need to have 5 references, two of which can be your texts from this class. Their references can be found in the course syllabus.

Correction Systems and Practices

Community Justice/Criminal Justice

Community Justice is a relatively new philosophy of justice that differs significantly in some respects to criminal justice. Research Community Justice and discuss how and where it began, how effective it has shown to be and what the prospects are for the future. Give detailed examples and be specific about the successes or failures the program may have had.

Instructions for Writing Your Paper

Write a 2 page APA style paper. Only the body of the paper will count toward the word requirement (title page and references are in addition to the 2 pages)

In your paper, cite at least 2-3 references using the APA style guide format for in-text citation.

Only one reference may be found on the internet. The other references must be found in the Grantham University online library (this includes EBSCO Host and the Gale Criminal Justice Collection).

Case 2
The case of many, who was 17 then involved a crime he committed in 1999 during the
fall. Manny together with his two gang members attacked a family around his neighborhood.
During the attack, a total of two men were stabbed and another four assaulted. There was a lady
who was six months pregnant and she was hit with a baseball bat on the stomach several times.
As a result, Manny was arraigned in court to be charged with four accounts of attempted murder.
The District attorney in his case wanted Manny tried in a criminal court as an adult. This
is because he had been charged with rape when he was 4 years old and hence was a repeat
offender. The charged he face were also serious and involved serious crimes. The judge made a
ruling to charge Manny in a criminal court where he was sentenced to nine years in the state
prison after he pleaded guilty to all charges.
The decision of the court was fair in this case. Despite being of young age, Manny was a
gang member who believed that violence is a just way to solve issues in the society. He was a
repeat offender, having been found guilty of rape at the age of 14 and he was sent to a juvenile
hall for rehabilitation. In spite of rehabilitation, he went ahead to commit the crimes he was
charged with a t the age of 17. As a result, the five criteria for determining whether he should be
tried in a criminal court as an adult was fair since it considered all aspects of his behavior over
the years and h did not meet one of the fie criteria hence making him eligible for trial in a

criminal court. (Sandiegouniontribune.com, 2018)This was a pure act of justice on the part of the
court because Manny was given fair trial and chance to be charged at the juvenile court, but his
shortcomings as a person failed him instead, where the court had offered to be lenient to him.
However, I believe that legislation regarding rehabilitation in the juvenile halls should be
amended to ensure that it fully serves the purpose of rehabilitating each person based on the
crime they committed. As shown in Manny’s case, in spite of being sent to juvenile rehabilitation
for rape, he did not receive any sexual offender counselling at the juvenile ranch that he was sent
to. There is also need to ensure that no parole is offered to offenders in the juvenile system until
they finish their stipulated period at the juvenile rehabilitation centers they are sent to. Being sent
to the juvenile halls and ranches is lenient enough and as a result, offering these same offenders
parole is a sign of too much permissiveness in the justice system. They ned to finish their
rehabilitation process for the stipulated period of time so that by the time they come out, they are
totally changed in their behavior and are ready to settle in the community as reformed people.
This would help to avoid having repeat offenders as in the case of Manny. (Pbs.org, 2018)
I believe that the families of these juvenile offenders would agree with the proposed
changes in legislation. This is because, when these juvenile offenders are provided with the
proper education and counselling on their crimes, they will be in a better position to understand
the weight of their cries and learn how to control themselves in ord...
