1
Creativity and The Education System
How does the speaker open the speech?
The speaker opens the speech by giving a general introduction to his topic, and
emphasizing its link to the themes of the conference. He also incorporates humor in this
introduction through a funny thought which sends the congregation into laughter. The
introduction by the narrator is essential as it helps in capturing the attention of the audience.
How is the speech organized?
The speech flows smoothly, and is well organized. The narrator first builds up stories
which relate to the topic of creativity, and schooling. He links the topic with the themes of the
seminar which are; inherent creativity, unpredictable future, and the ingenuity of children.
Additionally, he provides proper examples which are congruent to the theme of education which
he aims to explore. After this introduction, and linking in with the themes of the seminar, the
narrator clearly states his point of contention with regards to education. The rest of the speech
focuses on demonstrating the distinction between education, and creativity, and the associated
impacts. The talk ends with a conclusive paragraph that sums up everything, and leaves the
audience with food for thought.
What are the main points?
The main points in the talk are the importance of valuing creativity, and demonstrating
the potential harm education does to the young mind. In this case, the narrator affirms that art,

and creativity should be treated with the same magnitude with the ability to be literate. Another
evident point is that teachers, and professors should encourage art, and creativity the same way
they value mathematics, and languages. According to the speech, education has been prioritized
over arts, and creativity in order to serve the needs of industrialization, which has denied young
people the opportunity to pursue their own creations.
Facts, quotes, and Stats the speaker includes
The narrator affirms that education is slowly killing art, and to reinforce his point, he
makes use of captivating stories. The outstanding story which the narrator makes reference to is
the one which the tutor approaches a young girl who was drawing. Unable to know what the little
girl was drawing he goes ahead to ask which kind of picture she is drawing, and she says it is the
picture of Jesus. Even though the tutor tries to refute the attempts the girl says that they will be
able to know how Jesus looks like in two minutes. The story is both captivating, and educative,
and asserts the power of creativity which should be encouraged in education. The author also
notes that the education system around the world is rigid, and hierarchical in structure, a form
that undermines the dynamic nature of creativity. Finally, he quotes Picasso when he says that all
children are born artists. This gives his speech authenticity, and makes it believable, and
convincing.
How does the speaker use emotion?
The narrator makes use of emotions on different occasions. For instance, when he was
forced to move from one country to another, it was a sad time but instead, he uses the
opportunity to make the story humorous. At such a point he is able to command the attention of
the audience, and thus they can relate to the specific elements which he talks about in his speech.

The use of apparently conflicting emotions helps the audience see the contradicting nature of the
story. It helps the audience connect with the story through laughing, or sympathizing.
The talk using vivid language
The narrator makes use of vivid language by the use of funny comments which he inserts
strategically throughout the talk. He starts with a funny comment on the course of education, and
goes ahead to point out that professors live in their heads, and perceive the body as the carrier of
the head. The use of such language helps to captivate the audience, and prevent them from
boredom. Additionally, it helps to break the monotony of long narration. He also asks questions
that make a vivid picture in the audience’s mind such as “how annoying is that?”
How does the speech end?
The speech ends with the narrator affirming that indeed the education system undermines
creativity. However, he also notes that it is important that creativity is emphasized, and
appreciated for its richness. The speech’s end also encourages the audience to educate their
children wholly, and not only academically. This he poses it as a challenge that parents must
embrace in order to positively impact their children’s futures.
Is the speech effective? Did it persuade you?
The speech is effective as it makes use of all verbal, and non-verbal cues. The narrator
cohesively lays down his facts, and supports them with the stories which relate to the topic. Yes,
the speech persuaded me to believe that the education system has resulted in rigid, and
programmed thinking that inhibits free imagination, and artistic tendencies.
