Introduction
College students are more likely to engage in high-risk behavior such as the use of alcohol
and drug abuse. These have profound effects on the mental health and the emotional intelligence
of the young users The availability of drug and the alcohol is one of the contributing facts to their
indulgence by the young people. This paper reveals results of the research done to determine the
effects of abuse of prescription drugs and alcohol use by the teenagers on their mental health and
how their emotional intelligence can be affected by the use of alcohol and drugs such as marijuana
and tobacco. The researchers explain there are differences that exist in the alcohol-mental illness
and the drug mental illness. On the other hand, effects of the drugs on the emotional intelligence
of the users differ with the effects caused by alcohol. The data used in the two studies are credible
and the results realized are the true representation of the entire adolescent population.

This source presents a study that investigates whether and how alcohol abuse and the
misuse of prescription drugs among college students are associated with mental illness and also
the absence of mental health care. The study used nationally representative data collected from
American college students in a national survey conducted in 2010. The collected data were
analyzed using multinomial regression methods to relate the mental-health variables to the
likelihood of the respondent’s misuse of prescription drugs and alcohol abuse. This is a credible
source because the data used to conduct the study was collected in a national survey that collects
annual data from the United States population aged 12 years or order.
