Plot Summary
Chapter I.
A young Slovenian lieutenant Josef Trotta rescues from a bullet, in battle, the Emperor of
Austria-Hungary Franz Josef, for which he granted an Order of Maria Terisia, captaincy and the
title of Count. Married to a colonel's daughter's, Trotta departs for living in his estate. This occurs
after an embellished improbable publication in a children's textbook, where the emperor's salvation
is administered on a red horse, while Trotta did not serve in the cavalry. He asks for leave from the
emperor and moves to his estate to raize his son, Franz/
Chapter 2
An unattractive life in retirement is further darkened by his father and spouse's funerals. However,
having raised his son in conservative traditions, Trotta sends him to study to be a lawyer. In one of
his rare visits, the son brings an artist friend, who paints a portrait of Trotta. This portrait being
hung in the bedroom, brightens up his senile existence for a short while. At his death, Trotta
bequeathes his house to the needs of the military invalids, and leaves financial savings to Franz. His
memory was honored by the Viennese military band and salute, while the condolence to Franz was
written by the emperor himself.
Chapter 3
Karl Joseph listens to Radetzky's sarc by his window. It's time to enter the military academy,
as did his grandfather. He becomes a lieutenant. Upon his return home, Karl learns about the death
of Frau Slama, with great sorrow. On one of the walks with his father (a district chief), they meet in
his father's old friend in a cafe — Moser the artist, who painted a portrait of Josef Trotte. The artist
is drunk and generally worn-out. They give him the money.
Chapter 4
Karl Josef goes to the cemetery, to visit the Frau Slama's grave, and afterwards to visit her
husband. The sergeant welcomes him hospitably. After a short reception, the husband hands Karl
Josef a package with his letters to the deceased. After that, Karl goes to the bar, where he...
